Main Line roundup: Shipley boys’ lacrosse team on winning track

The Shipley School boys’ lacrosse team (10-3, 3-1) defeated Westtown, 14-2, Tuesday. Leading the way was Luke Grayum (two goals, five assists), Ben Aschkenasy (two goals, three assists) and Jake McCartthy (won 15 of 15 faceoffs).
The Gators defeated Harriton, 6-5, in overtime at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival April 27, with the game-winner caoming from Braeden Lange at the buzzer of the first overtime. The Gators were aided by solid goaltending by Kyle Mezrow (six saves in the first half) and Nate Yi (seven saves in the second half), strong defense from Tom Kim, Spencer Dee, Egan Butala, TJ McCabe, Hunter Gallo, Cam Light, Tyler Drake and Dean Maner, and Jake McCarthy winning 11 of 15 faceoffs. Luke Grayum led the offense with two goals and one assist.

Boys’ lacrosse
Conestoga defeated Upper Darby, 23-4, Tuesday, as 17 different Pioneers scored at least one goal, led by led by Will Schnorr (four goals), Michael Brosso (three goals) and Joey Allen (two goals).
The Pioneers defeated Penn Charter, 9-6, at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival April 27. Will Schnorr and Joey Allen each had a hat trick, Brendan Murphy had two goals and an assist and goalie Mick Lee recorded seven saves.
Episcopal Academy defeated Hun School, 11-9, Tuesday. Gabe Furey had three goals, Charlie Cunniffe dished out four assists and Matt Chess recorded seven saves.
The Churchmen defeated Radnor, 8-6, at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival April 27. The Churchmen were led by Gabe Furey (four goals, one assist), Rowan Brumbaugh (two goals, one assist), Charlie Cunniffe (one goal, two assists), Matt Chess (six saves) and Jack Henderson (won 12 of 17 faceoffs).
Harriton lost to Springfield, 13-7, Tuesday. The Rams got two goals each from Aeden McKenna, Jack Northington and Jackson Smith.
Tha Rams lost to Shipley, 6-5, in overtime at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival April 27. The Rams were led by Brian Stewart (two goals), Jack Northington (two goals), Michael Stewart (one goal, three ground balls), Spencer Anmuth (four ground balls, one caused turnover) and goalie Robbie DePetris (17 saves).
Girls’ lacrosse
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Germantown Academy, 17-8, Tuesday. For the Irish, Georgie Gorelick scored four goals and Claire Gola tallied three.
Agnes Irwin lost to Episcopal Academy, 12-11, Tuesday. The Owls got hat tricks from Emily Wills and Marissa White, and goalie Paige Crowther recorded 10 saves.
The Owls defeated Villa Maria Academy, 19-15. The Owls were led by Emily Wills (six goals), Julianne Carey (three goals, five draw controls), Natalie Pansini (three goals, two assists, four draw controls) and Marissa White (three goals, four draw controls).
Archbishop Carroll defeated Archbishop Wood, 16-2, Tuesday, getting four goals each from Madison Henry and Kiley Mottice. Keri Daly won nine draw controls for Carroll (11-3, 8-0).
Conestoga defeated Upper Darby, 18-4, Tuesday, as 17 different Pioneers scored a goal. Liza Bailey dished out three assists, and Katie Morrison had two goals for Conestoga.
The Pioneers defeated Downingtown West, 14-10, April 27, led by Liza Bailey (three goals), Rachel Clark (three goals, one assist) and Cam Evitts (four goals, two assists).
Episcopal Academy defeated Agnes Irwin, 12-11, Tuesday, led by Caroline Burt (three goals), Devon Whitaker (three goals), Olivia Dirks (three goals, two assists, six draw controls) and Gianna Cilluffo (eight saves).
The Churchwomen defeated Owen J. Roberts, 16-12, April 27, led by Olivia Dirks (six goals, 14 draw controls, including her 500th career draw control), Caroline Burt (three goals), Devon Whitaker (three goals) and Izzy Rohr (200th career draw control).

The Rams, who scored the first eight goals of the game, were led by Allie Schwab (three goals, seven assists), Katelin Williams (four goals), Lucy Dwyer (four goals), Enily Stewart (two goals, eight draw controls, five ground balls) and Maddie Henderson (three goals, one assist, two caused turnovers).
Haverford High defeated Ridley, 8-7, in overtime Tuesday. Mia Ciancio scored three goals (including the game-winner), won five draw controls and scooped up seven ground balls. Goalie Lauren Johns recorded 19 saves.
Radnor defeated Unionville, 11-7, April 27 at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival. Ellie Mueller scored five goals, and Cate Cox had a hand in five tallies with three goals and two assists as the Raiders overturned a halftime deficit by scoring nine goals in the second half. Margaret Mooney added two goals, Sarah Nelson had a team-high six draw controls and Phoebe Proctor made six saves for Radnor (9-4).
Shipley defeated Westtown, 17-7, Tuesday, led by Katie Bergen (seven goals), Kate Scutt (seven goals) and goalie Grace Donnelly (nine saves, two ground balls).
The Gators defeated Lower Merion, 17-10, at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival April 27. The Gators were led by Katie Bergen (three goals, six draw controls), Grace Gordon (two goals, three ground balls), Kate Scutt (six goals, three ground balls, five draw controls), Elizabeth Talluto (four goals, three ground balls, two draw controls) and Grace Donnelly (12 saves, eight ground balls).
Villa Maria Academy (13-1, 11-0) defeated Mount St. Joseph, 22-13, Tuesday, led by four goals and three assists from Abby Walheim; five goals and two assists from Bridget Finley; and six goals and two assists from Margie Carden.
The Hurricanes suffered their first defeat of the season, losing to Agnes Irwin, 19-15, at the 19th annual KSF Lacrosse Festival April 27. Abby Walheim scored six goals, Bridget Finley had three goals and five assists, and Margie Carden tallied four goals.
Baseball
Conestoga lost to Strath Haven, 9-2, Monday. Will Mauro hit a two run home run and Cam Marcus also recorded two hits on the day.
The Pioneers lost to Harriton, 5-2, April 25. Josh Merrill went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers.
Devon Prep defeated Archbishop Wood, 4-3, Monday. The Tide pulled away for good with three runs in the fifth inning. In the fifth Andrew Czachor homered on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs and Matt Romano had an RBI single on a 3-2 count.
Harriton defeated Conestoga, 5-2, April 25. Mike Becker hit a three-run home run for the Rams, and winning pitcher Jack Kochanowicz struck out 13 batters in six innings.
Lower Merion defeated Radnor, 3-0, Monday, as the Aces’ Kyle Patlove hurled a three-hit shutout. Lower Merion had only two hits but drew seven walks, two by Patlove and two by Ben Birch.
Four days earlier, the Aces defeated Strath Haven, 4-0. Casey Murphy pitched a six-hit shutout, striking out six batters. Therien Moore hit a double for the Aces.
Softball
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Germantown Academy, 10-0, Tuesday, in five innings. Grace Jackson pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out eight batters.
The Irish defeated Episcopal Academy, 5-3, April 27. Bianca Rosato smacked the go-ahead, two-run single in the top of the fifth inning after Caroline Adams’ two-run knock tied the score.
Baldwin School defeated Episcopal Academy, 2-0, April 25. Maura Smith pitched a one-hitter, striking out 13 batters. Hanna Maier hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie.
Conestoga defeated Strath Haven, 13-4, Monday. Libby Winters went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Pioneers, Kate Clement went 3-for-3 and Claire Overton had a home run and three RBIs for Conestoga (13-0, 10-0).
The Pioneers defeated Harriton, 10-0, April 25. Libby Winters pitched a five-hit shutout, while going 3-for-4 at bat. Jenny Noll and Faith Walker each went 2-for-4.
Villa Maria Academy defeated Mount St. Joseph’s, 13-7, Tuesday. The Hurricanes cracked out 19 hits, led by Riley Miller (3-for-5), Mary Willcox (2-for-4, three RBIs, triple), Fiona McDaid (3-for-4) and Fran Delviscio (3-for-4, three runs scored, double, triple).
The Hurricanes defeated Unionville, 6-5, Monday. Winning pitcher Alyssa Viscardo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Boys’ tennis
Episcopal Academy finished fourth in a field of 14 at the 2019 George C. Shafer Jr. Doubles Invitational Tournament. The tournament, hosted by EA, featured some of the East Coast’s top high school teams, including Gilman School (Md.), Brunswick School (Conn.), Sidwell Friends School (Washington, DC), and Lawrenceville School (N.J.) EA’s third doubles team of sophomores Petey Dugery and Dhilan Lavu finished second, and the Churchmens’ fourth doubles team of senior Robbie Copit and freshman John Bishop placed third.
Harriton defeated West Chester East, 7-0, Monday, earning straight set wins at all seven matches. Singles winners were Will Hoog, Matthieu Bennit-Cattin and Jay Ramaswamy.
Haverford School defeated Germantown Academy, 7-0, Tuesday, getting singles wins from Nikhil Chakraborty (first), Sunny Yu (second) and Cole Wolf (third).
The Fords placed eighth at the 2019 George C. Shafer Jr. Doubles Invitational Tournament. The Fords were paced by the first doubles team of Nick Chakraborty and Thomas Ward, who reached the second round of their flight, and by the third doubles team of Aly Ba and Joaquin Arias, who also reached the second round. Brunswick was the tournament champion, with 26.5 points, while the Fords recorded six points for their eighth place finish.
The Fords edged Princeton Day, 3-2, April 25. Nikhil Chakraborty won in straight sets at first singles and Cole Wolf won at third singles in straight sets.
Lower Merion defeated Conestoga, 4-3, April 25. Vik Miller at No. 1 singles and Scotty Stewart and Alex Zhang at No. 4 doubles won in straight sets, while Justin Minerva at No. 2 singles needed three sets to win his match for the Aces.
The match came down to No. 1 doubles, where Aseda Adebamgbe and Ethan Blum came back from a match point down to win it in three sets, winning the third set tiebreaker 7-5. The key point of the No. 1 doubles match came when Adebamgbe served an ace with his second serve down a match point at 5-6, 30-40 in the third set to turn the momentum to the side of the Aces.
Radnor defeated Upper Darby, 7-0, Tuesday, winning six matches in straight sets. At first singles, Max Safanov defeated Brandon Caban, Garrett Spillerman won at second singles and Alex Weiss was victorious at third singles.
Monday, Radnor defeated Pennsbury, 6-1, winning five matches in straight sets. Two of the five were at first singles (Garrett Spillerman) and second singles (Alex Weiss).
Shipley defeated Westtown, 4-1, Tuesday. Singles winners for the Gators were Samson Sands (first), Sebastian Fras (second) and Max Homans (third).
The Gators defeated Germantown Friends, 4-1, April 24, as Shipley wins came from Sebastian Fras, Max Homans, the pair of Jared Pearlstein and Jacob Israeli, and the duo of Aaron Liao and Jamie Slater.
Crew
Lower Merion had four second-place finishers at the Cooper Cup Regatta April 28. The Girls V4+ of Annika Edwards, Dahlia Levine, Valentina Frusone, Ella Garcia and Faye Berry (coxswain) finished second, as did the Boys JV 8+ of Aidan Barr-Bono, Charlie Berman, Zeke Kelz, Bruno Kraidy, Maximus Forester, Issac Berman, Paul DeSouza, Julius Murphy and Brad Wootton (coxswain). The Girls Novice 8+ of Sadie White, Lila Traynor, Avery Valenta, Charlene Powell, Riley Reese, Macy Donahoe, Shoshana Primmer, Delaney Morgan and Macy Bronte (coxswain) placed second, as did the Boys Novice 8+ of Nathan Cengel, Win Hill, Luca DiCriscio, Liam Gordon, Jonathan Mills, Zev Charleston, Sagi Shdaimah, Ezra Thau and Ben Scheluebbe (coxswain).
Track & Field
Episcopal Academy (girls) defeated Agnes Irwin (93-31) and Baldwin School (98-17) Tuesday. EA winners included Jasmine Williams (triple jump), Kathleen Anderson (100 meter run, 13.13), Laura Null (100 meter hurdles), Rae Keffer-Scharpf (high jump, 4-10), Ally Wilchusky (800 meter run) and Kristin Jorgensen (1600 meter run).
Radnor (girls) set two school records in their tri-meet against Haverford and Marple Newtown Monday. Mab Rongione cleared 9’7” to set a new standard in the pole vault. Zoe Metzger improved on her own record in the javelin with a 111’7” performance. Other individual winners were Lucy Minning in the 100 meter run and 200 meter race, and Keara Seasholtz in the 1600 meter run. The Raiders’ Keara Seasholtz won the 800 meter run at the Unionville Invitational April 27, as her time of 2:16.6 was one of the top clockings in the state this season.
Golf
Agnes Irwin lost to Academy of Notre Dame, 248-264, Tuesday at Gulph Mills Golf Club. The Owls were led by Maura Boyle (46) and Lilly Press (48).
