Conway, Burton lead dominant Owen J. Roberts in return of City Championships
For many years, the ‘City Championships’ made for a perfect way to fire the starting gun on the cross country season for Owen J. Roberts, Pottstown, Pottsgrove and The Hill School.
After a four-year hiatus with the meet run only as a scrimmage, the City Championships returned Friday.
The Owen J. Roberts teams, running at their home course Warwick Park, apparently enjoy the event, especially after their performances.
The Wildcats won both boys and girls events, led by race winners Liam Conway (10:35) and Ally Burton (13:01).
In team scoring among boys, Owen J. Roberts’ 23 topped Pottsgrove (52), Pottstown (115) and Hill (116).
The OJR girls dominated with the first eight finishers dressed in red. OJR’s 15 topped Pottsgrove (87), Pottstown (163) and Hill School, which did not have a complete team.
Xavier Friel (10:59) and Ali Kayre (11:03) went 2-3 for Hill, but OJR had the next four finishers with Sean Barone (11:04) and Abe VanHelmond (11:06) rounding out the top 5.
Pottsgrove’s top finisher was Michael Neeson (11:11) followed by Pottstown’s Justin Beasley-Turner (11:17).
In the girls race, Burton was followed by teammates Meg Bernotas, Alex Glasier, Katie Proffitt, Emily Hansell, Mary Bernotas, Andrea Shade and Emma Torak in second through eighth. Pottsgrove’s Dyani Hairston broke up the OJR dominance by finishing ninth.
