Gillespie’s fast start leads Garnet Valley to first win

Any golfer will tell you that a birdie is the perfect way to start any round. Opening with back-to-back birdies is even better.

That was the way Garnet Valley’s Jimmy Gillespie started his round as the Jaguars downed Haverford High, 203-213, in a Central League match at Concord Country Club.

Gillespie used that fast start to card a 1-over par 36 and lead the Jaguars (1-2 overall and league) to their first win of the season. Mason Hudock had a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole en route to a 2-over 37. Pat Finn also had a birdie in a 6-over par round of 41.

Frankie McVeigh carded a 2-over par 38 to lead the Fords.

In other Central League action:

Springfield 231, Upper Darby 252 >> Josh Luchon had a birdie on No. 1 and another on No. 8 to finish with a 2-over 38 to lead the Cougars. Dillon Baun finished with a 44, while his twin brother Derrick carded a 49. Freshman Reed Curtis also shot 49 on just his second time on the course at Rolling Green Golf Club.

Michael Wolf fired a 5-over par 41 to lead Upper Darby.

In nonleague action:
