O’Hara sweeps singles matches in victory
The Cardinal O’Hara tennis team owned singles play Monday, with straight-sets wins by Dominic Degnan, Ryan Shields and Andrew Shuda paving the way for a 4-1 Catholic League win over Bonner-Prendergast for the Lions (1-2, 1-1).
The second doubles tandem of Ryan Kerrigan and James O’Connor notched the Friars’ only point in a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
In nonleague action:
Academy Park 4, Friends Select 1: Jamal Sumpter gutted out a second-set tiebreaker to claim a 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) win at second singles that helped seal the win for the Knights.
Duwaine Jenkins and Nazir Clark-Crooms notched the other singles victories for the Knights (2-0), who claimed career win No. 570 for coach Reggie Day.
In the Central League:
Lower Merion 7, Strath Haven 0: Jeff Himelstein battled Matt Chen to a 6-4 first set at second singles, but that’s the closest a Panthers got to a set win as Haven (4-2, 3-1) fell.
