Bullotta’s four goals lead Phoenixville over Pottsgrove
Five different players scored goals, and Phoenixville scored eight unanswered goals in the second half of a 15-3 Pioneer Athletic Conference girls lacrosse season-opening victory over Pottsgrove Monday afternoon at Washington Field.
The Phantoms scored the first three goals of the contest and led 7-3 at halftime before breaking the game open during the second half.
Zoe Bullotta, who had a game-high four goals on the day, recorded the first two goals of the game with assists by T.J. Jefferis at the 22:41 and 22:08 marks of the first half. Carolyn Groener made the score 3-0 with the first of her three goals with an assist by Kylie Crovetti at the 9:50 mark.
Jefferis, Groener and Crovetti each closed with three goals while Rachael Sims had the other goal for the Phantoms. Jefferis handed out three assists while Groener had two and Crovetti and Tara Gilroy one apiece.
Cheyenne Owens posted two goals for Pottsgrove while Arayna Hedgepeth had one.
The game did feature two of the best goalies in the area in Pottsgrove’s Hailey Jacobs and Phoenixville’s Megan Nemeth. Jacobs, who has committed to Division II Seton Hill University, registered 17 saves with 15 of them coming during an outstanding first half. Nemeth, who has committed to Division III Fairleigh Dickinson University (Florham), finished with 11 saves.
“It was a good first game,’ said Bullotta. “But we definitely have stuff to clean up. We have to fix up mistakes before we face the bigger games. Our team is really comfortable with each other. We look for the open girl and are making good connections.’
Despite the lopsided score, Jacobs is confident in her team.
“We had a lot of good stuff on offense,’ said Jacobs. “It was the first time we have been on a field all season. We have been practicing in the parking lot because of the snow. I am happy with our first game, but we need improvement. They (Phantoms) had some pretty hard shots, but nothing I’m not used to seeing as a goalie. They had some really accurate shots.’
