Pennsbury rebounds with a win over Council Rock South

FALLS TWP. – Pennsbury junior shortstop Sydney Jakimowicz started the season batting leadoff and was at that position in the lineup as recently as the team’s non-league win over Conwell-Egan on Easter Saturday.

Now, here she was batting ninth after the Lady Falcons’ mercy-ruled 10-0 loss Tuesday at archrival Neshaminy.

Both the Pennsbury shortstop and the team rebounded in a big way, with a solid 5-1 triumph over Suburban One National League rival Council Rock South Thursday on the Falcons’ home field.

Jakimowicz hit 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base as Pennsbury outpaced the Golden Hawks, 5-1.

“It doesn’t really matter to me. I just want to help out my team the best I can,” said Jakimowicz. “Wherever they want to put to help out the team, it’s all good to me.”

After the Falcons’ 10-0 loss to the Lady Skins Tuesday, April 18 on Pennsbury’s home field, the Falcons were looking to rebound against a league opponent. It just so happened that CR South was the victim, in this situation.

“This win was really important because of the way we took the loss with Neshaminy and the way we came back as a team, together,” said Jakimowicz.

The Hawks actually took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff double by senior Stephanie Andreoli, a sac-bunt by freshman Kylie Woloshyn and a bunt single by senior Melanie Wilkinson.

But the Falcons (7-2) answered back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI single by Pennsbury sophomore Allison Rose and an RBI double by senior Mia Pitt were the big hits, though the Golden Hawks didn’t help their own cause with a pair of errors in the frame.

Pennsbury had runners at the corners in the second inning when Sierra Daley slapped a ball to third base. Wilkinson threw the ball home but the runner turned around halfway down the line. The ensuing throw to third base sailed into left field, scoring the first unearned run.

Rose followed with a single to left field that was bobbled, scoring another unearned run and putting the Falcons on top 3-1, this time to stay.

CR South (6-2) has had to scramble its middle infield with an early-season injury to senior shortstop Phylicia Wilkov that has limited her to hitting duties.

“It’s tough,” said Wilcov, who is headed to Yale. “We had to move some things around. My arm has been bothering me so I’ve only been able to hit. We had to switch up our infield, whose catching and our outfield so it’s been a big adjustment.”

For the game, Pennsbury junior righthander Alyssa Hileman tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight batters while walking none. Her counterpart, South freshman righthander Danielle Walters, surrendered five runs on seven hits, striking out seven batters and walking three.

Falcons second baseman Sierra Daley hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Andreoli opened the game with a double and a run scored for the Golden Hawks but that was all the offense South would muster in this one.
