Conestoga center back Hannah Morgan is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

Hannah Morgan

The senior center back was Central League MVP this fall, and was named United Soccer Coaches All-Region, and USC All-American (she will be honored at a luncheon at the USC’s yearly convention in Philadelphia in January). The Providence College commit also was named PSCA All-State, and was on the All-American Watch-list. As a junior, she was runner-up in the Central League MVP voting and was All-State, and NSCAA All-Region. Conestoga girls’ soccer head coach Ben Wilson said, “What separates Hannah from your typical high school athlete is the confidence and composure she has on the field, which has a huge calming effect on her fellow teammates when they are in tough situations. The most impressive thing to me about Hannah though is that even though she is an All-American level athlete, she is never playing for herself. She plays to help her team win, and does absolutely whatever is needed. She is also consistently taking younger players under her wing to help them develop.”

Q: When did you start playing center back – what attracted you to the position? What do you think are the most important attributes of a center back?

A: I have been playing center back ever since I first started playing soccer. I have always felt most comfortable playing in the back line. I think the most important attributes of a center back are the ability the read the game well and anticipate what the other team is going to do along with communication because center backs can see the whole field.

Q: What do you think is the strongest part of your game? What part of your game are you working the most on at the present time?

A: I think the strongest part of my game is my 1v1 defending. Something that I am working on right now is my speed of play and long balls.

Q: How did you see your on-field leadership role as a center back?

A: As a center back, it’s very important to communicate with everyone on the field, so I think I used my leadership on the field to make sure everyone was in the right positions.

Q: You wore No. 11 for Conestoga – was there a reason you chose that number, does it have any significance to you?

A: No. 11 is a very important number for me because it is the number that I’ve been wearing since second grade.

Q: Tell us a little about your pre-game preparation the day of a game.

A: On the day of a game I make sure I’m eating healthy and drinking a lot of water. When I get in the locker room I usually just listen to music to get excited for the game.

Q: What originally sparked your interest in soccer? Who have been your top soccer mentors, and what has been the most important thing each of them taught you?

A: My parents signed me up for the rec league when I was in kindergarten and I fell in love with the game. Some of my top soccer mentors have been my high school coach Ben Wilson and my club coaches. The most important thing that have taught me in dedication and hard work.

Q: Do you participate in any extracurricular activities at Conestoga outside of soccer?

A: I participate in Athletes Helping Actively which is a club at Conestoga.
