Neshaminy girls soccer wraps regular season up with a win

LANGHORNE – When Neshaminy hosted Council Rock South Thursday night, Oct. 20 at Harry Franks Stadium, the Lady Skins knew what they had to do. They had to generate some offense.

The last time these two opponents squared off, the result was a scoreless tie, a draw that cost Neshaminy a share of the Suburban One League (SOL) National Conference title, which went to Pennsbury for a third straight season with its 9-0 triumph over Harry S Truman Thursday in its regular season league finale.

On Senior Night, midfielder Riley Nyhus was more than willing to oblige, coming up with a goal and an assist, helping the Skins to their 16th win of the season, their 10th in the SOL National.

Nyhus tallied the game-winner with five minutes left in the first half when she booted a flick from sophomore Brooke Mullin in between the legs of Golden Hawks goalkeeper Chelsea Jameson.

With 15 minutes left in the league duel, Nyhus kicked a corner ball into the box where junior Nicole Palmer was waiting with a header into the back of the opposing net, putting Neshaminy up, 3-0.

Senior forward Alyssa Tobin added the second goal for the Skins on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute of play.

Neshaminy finishes the regular season at 16-1-1, overall, 10-1-1 in the SOL National division while CR South wraps it up at 11-6-1, overall, 7-4-1 in the league.

As of Oct. 16, the Skins and the Falcons are one-two in the Area Girls Soccer Power Rankings with Conestoga (11-0-4) in third. Pennsbury (14-1, 11-1 SOL) could jump over Neshaminy with a win today against the Pioneers.

The District 1 seeding meeting is Sunday, Oct. 23 with first-round Class AAAA action beginning Tuesday, Oct. 25. Pennsbury and Neshaminy will receive first-round byes so they’ll have to wait until the Round of 16, slated for Thursday, Oct. 27.

It remains to be seen but both Council Rock South and CR North should be playing in first-round District 1 matchups. The top 24 teams earn berths and as of Oct. 16, South was ranked 17th and North was 22nd.

The Lady Indians (11-6 overall, 6-6: SOL) helped their fortunes along with a 2-0 win Thursday, Oct. 20 at home over Catholic Academies (AACA) rival Mount Saint Joseph.

Senior Kayla Robinson tallied twice in the first half for Rock North and senior goalkeeper Carly Riggs registered her 11th shutout of the season.
