Pina, McGurk fuel Notre Dame to fast PAISAA start

Maggie Pina and Mandy McGurk showed no signs of fatigue in playing their second game in as many days.

Pina and McGurk combined for 40 points to pace Notre Dame to a 74-35 rout of the George School in the first round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association girls basketball tournament.

The sixth-seeded Irish (17-6) won’t get much time to rest. They’re right back at it Saturday. Notre Dame visits third-seeded Shipley School for a 12 noon start in the quarterfinals. The Gators had a bye in the first round of the tournament.

Pina scored 21 points and McGurk added 19, and the Irish used a fast start to put the game away. Notre Dame opened up a 27-12 lead after one quarter and took a 47-17 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Abington Friends 76, Agnes Irwin 33 >> A 24-2 first-quarter deficit was too much for the 13th-seeded Owls to overcome. Mary Grace Miller led AIS with 11 points.

Paige Mott scored 19 points and Mihjae Hayes added 14 for the fourth-seeded Kangaroos, who host fifth-seeded Westtown, a 65-51 winner over No. 12 Springside Chestnut Hill, in the quarterfinals at Germantown Academy Saturday.

Friends’ Central 52, Episcopal Academy 43 >> The eighth-seeded Phoenix outscored the ninth-seeded Churchwomen, 12-3, in the fourth quarter to break a 40-all deadlock and to advance to a quarterfinal showdown at top-seeded Germantown Academy Saturday.

Madison Smith led all scorers with 24 points to pace Friends’ Central. Olivia Dirks scored nine points and Allie Sillo and Riley Cassidy added eight points each for EA.
