Mercury Girls Basketball Roundup: Hill School wins MAPL opener

Hill School 28, Peddie School 22 >> While the Blues’ offense didn’t get warmed up until the second half, the defense held strong throughout as they downed Peddie School in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League matchup Saturday.

After going scoreless in the first quarter, Hill trailed, 8-3, at halftime. The Blues didn’t take the lead until a bucket by sophomore Cynthia Williams, a three-pointer by sophomore Tess Gray and a finish from the inside by senior Alexa Giacche highlighted a 9-2 run that pushed the Blues to a 15-14 advantage to end the third quarter. Vigo led the Hill with nine points; Williams, Gray and Olivia Matto added five points apiece and Giacche had four.

Spring-Ford 39, Cumberland Valley 34 >> The Rams made their early lead hold up for a non-league victory over Cumberland Valley.

Lucy Olsen collected a game-high 22 points in helping Spring-Ford open a 30-23 lead through three quarters. Emily Tiffan contributed another nine to the Rams’ offense.

Pottsgrove 42, Bethlehem Liberty 29 >> The Falcons weathered a low-production third quarter on the way to their non-league victory over Bethlehem Liberty.

Up 25-12 at the half, Pottsgrove saw Liberty cut the deficit when it mustered just one point in the third quarter. Sydney Mowery got 10 of her game-high 12 points in the fourth quarter, and Sierra Potts followed with nine.

Central Bucks East 47, Perkiomen Valley 25 >> Caroline Pla produced the game’s lone double-figure scoring output, heading the Patriots’ non-league victory over the Vikings.

Pla led the way with her 14-point effort. PV’s scoring leader was Kelly Owens with eight.
