Delco Girls Basketball ROUNDUP: Sweeney’s 24 points lead Carroll past Notre Dame

Erin Sweeney poured in 24 points to lead Archbishop Carroll to a 48-34 victory over Academy of Notre Dame at the Cardinal O’Hara Holiday Tournament Saturday.

The Patriots (4-4) led the entire way and outscored the Irish, 30-20, in the second half. Harlem Jennings added 11 points, and Grace O’Neill tossed in eight for the Patriots, who shot 12 of 13 at the free-throw line.

Carroll kept Notre Dame’s top scorers in check. All-Delco Mandy McGurk was limited to 10 points, and Maggie Pina, a former Archbishop Carroll player, had nine.

In other Cardinal O’Hara Tournament games:

Villa Maria 46, Cardinal O’Hara 38 >> The Lions, who led by a point at halftime, were outscored 15-7 in the final quarter.

Freshman Sydni Scott (15 points) and sophomore Amaris Baker (11) each made three 3-point field goals for the Lions, who converted all eight of their attempts at the free-throw line. Steph Huseby chipped in with six points.

Gloucester Catholic 61, Episcopal Academy 44 >> The Churchwomen (3-7) got another strong performance by freshman Amanda Purcell, who drilled five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points. EA was outscored 20-5 in the second quarter and couldn’t recover.

Bella Piselli added five points and four assists, while Riley Cassidy tossed in six points for Episcopal.

Abington 58, Archbishop Carroll 54 >> The Patriots fell in overtime in their tournament opener Friday. Kassandra Brown made four foul shots in OT to lift Abington to victory.

Sweeney poured in 22 points in the setback.  Jennings scored 10 points and Grace O’Neill had nine.

At the Colonial Invitational:

Springfield 57, Bullis (Md.) 39 >> The Cougars (7-0) dominated on their holiday trip to Williamsburg, Va., capturing the tournament title.

Jordan D’Ambrosio was named MVP, while Alexa Abbonizio and Belle Mastropietro were selected to the all-tournament squad.

Abbonizio paired a game-high 21 points with five rebounds. She drained four 3-pointers. D’Ambrosio tossed in 17 points, Rachel Conran netted seven points, and Mastropietro added six boards and four assists.

At the Boardwalk Classic:

Strath Haven 42, Lower Cape May 37 >> Faith Raymond tallied nine points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two steals to pace the Panthers (6-1). Jazmeen Harper pitched in nine points and Danielle McNeely had eight.

At the St. Pius X Christmas Classic:

Bonner & Prendergast 65, St. Pius X 51 >> Maeve McCann’s 11-point effort helped the Pandas take third place in the tournament in Atlanta, Ga. The senior guard was named to the all-tournament team.

Dakota McCaughan banked five 3-pointers for a team-high 15 points. Ariana McGeary posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Alexis Gleason added 12 points for the Pandas (5-2). Bridie McCann contributed eight points in the victory.

At the Marple Newtown Tournament:

Downingtown East 45, Penn Wood 33 >> The Patriots (3-5) played well defensively, but poor shooting from the field proved costly in the championship game.

Racquel Curry had 13 points and was a rebound short of a double-double. Jada Hutt netted eight points and grabbed 16 boards, while Enayiah Price had four points and four steals.

No details of the consolation game between Marple Newtown and Pope John Paul II were reported to the Daily Times.

At the Robert Hopf Holiday Tournament:

Jenkintown 40, Sacred Heart 32 >> In a battle of defending District 1 champions, the Lions fell in the title game. Liz Franz and Kyra Quigley, who was named to the all-tournament team, each scored 10 points for Sacred.

Carly Mulvaney of Jenkintown had 12 points and en route to earning tournament MVP honors.
