Archbishop Carroll’s Erin Sweeney is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

The junior recently scored 36 points in a double-overtime win against  Staten Island Academy, then followed it up with a 26-point performance against Bonner-Prendergast. As a sophomore, she was an All-Catholic League selection, averaging 10 point per game and was a key player in the Patriots’ drive to the PIAA 5A state semifinals. Off the court, she is a member of Student Ambassadors at Archbishop Carroll.

Q: What has been the key to your prolific offensive production this season?

A: The key to my offensive production has been being patient on offense and finding the open shot. It has also been important for me to remember to keep shooting and forget any shots I missed and have confidence in the next shot.

Q: What area of your game do you feel you improved the most in the off-season?

A: This offseason I feel that I improved most is my three point shooting.  I tried to shoot every day during the offseason and Mrs. Shields and Erin Shields gave me a workout routine that really helped improve my shot.

Q: What do you think is the strongest aspect of your game? What part of your game are you working on the most currently?

A: I believe the strongest aspect of game is my versatility.  With Carroll and my Comets AAU team I play multiple positions depending on the lineup on the floor.  The part of my game that I am working to improve currently is speed on defense and ball handling.

Q: Tell us a little about your pre-game preparation the day of a game.

A: On the day of a game, I usually listen to some music to get focused and ready for game time. I also eat a Clif bar and a banana before almost every game.

Q: Who is your favorite basketball player, and why?

A: My favorite basketball player is JJ Redick because he never stops moving on the court and always works to get his teammates open. He is an example of how to be constantly active on the floor and be a great teammate.

Q: You wear No. 22 for Archbishop Carroll. Why did you pick this number – does it have any special significance to you?

A: I picked this number because I wore it for a couple of years in grade school at St. Bernadette and also my birthday is on the 22nd of March.

Q: What is your favorite academic subject at school? Is there a career path that particularly interests you at the present time?

A: My favorite subject is anatomy and physiology class. A career path that interests me at the present time is physical therapy or nursing.

Q: Can you tell us a little about Student Ambassadors, and what you like best about it?

A: Student Ambassadors helps with events that the school holds, such as open houses, where we give tours, greet guests, and give others information about our school. The thing I like most about it is being able to help promote my school.
