Abington rallies past Plymouth Whitemarsh for 8th straight win

ABINGTON >> In a thrilling game featuring two returning PIAA qualifiers, the Abington girls basketball team defeated Plymouth Whitemarsh 52-46 last Wednesday night.

After poor weather conditions postponed the game from Tuesday, the Galloping Ghosts came back from a 10-point deficit after the first quarter to get the comeback victory.

The Colonials scored 21 points in the first quarter with Anna McTamney scoring 11.

Despite sloppy defense in the first quarter, the Ghosts found a way to bounce back decreasing the Colonial lead down to two points at halftime.

Both teams stepped up their offenses as they exchanged the lead several times.

However, it was Abington getting a 41-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

With amazing defense from Kassondra Brown, the Ghosts outscored the Colonials 11-6 in the fourth to get their eighth straight win.

Brown finished the game with a game-high 17 points in the thrilling victory for the Ghosts.

“It was definitely a hard game tonight after a very emotional game against Upper Dublin,” said Brown. “I didn’t score as much as I wanted to, but I got some steals and rebounds to help get the win.”

“The overall goal is to win every game from this point,” added Brown. “We want to win every championship and we want to go as far as we can in the states.”

Abington head coach Dan Marsh was thrilled with his team’s performance against a tough Colonial team.

“You got to give Plymouth Whitemarsh credit because they came here ready to play and to beat us,” said Marsh. “We were on our heels for most of the first half and we had to play comeback for the rest of the game.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Dan Dougherty was pleased with how his team played against the tough Abington team.

“Both teams like to play up tempo and I thought we matched their physicality in the first half,” said Dougherty. “Abington made more lay ups in the second half than we did and we both had the same number of opportunities but we just didn’t finish the game.”

With the loss, the Colonials drop to 16-4 and snap their seven-game winning streak.
