Daniel Boone has no answer for Wilson, Christian Sload in shutout loss

WEST LAWN>> Christian Sload scored two first-half goals in nearly identical fashion. That was more than enough for the Wilson Bulldogs to remain unbeaten in Berks Section 1 with a 5-0 win over the Daniel Boone Blazers Wednesday night at John Gurski Stadium.

Sload — who upped his Berks League-leading total to 17  — was joined on the scoresheet by Danny Gallagher, Ryan Terefenko and Ryan Deane. At the other end, Wilson (11-2, 6-0) held Boone without a shot on target.

The electrifying senior forward opened the scoring by receiving an outlet pass seized off a loose ball, dribbling the final 30 yards, dekeing the lone Boone defensive back and firing the ball past Blazers keeper Nathan Leon-Guerrero not seven minutes into the contest.

He basically repeated the same move at the quarter-pole to give Wilson a 2-0 lead.

Boone (2-4, 6-6) had lost its shape, badly, on both turns — and a sniping Sload seized on the opportunities.

“Wilson definitely played well, but we made mistakes that helped them,” Boone head coach Matt Kade said. “It was one of the things coming into this game that we focused on, and honestly, it was mental lapses. We came into this match with a game plan and we did not execute it.

“There was a lack of communication. When a player has to slide to support another player, everybody has to rotate and cover for each other, and it just wasn’t happening. And it needed to be happening in our defensive third.”

Danny Gallagher gave the host Bulldogs a 3-0 lead with 13:01 left in the first half, when Leon-Guerrero started to charge a loose ball flying his way, changed his mind near the 18 and attempted to backpedal. It was too late, as Gallagher had caught up and flicked a long chip past him for an easy marker. Guerrero was pulled for Jackson Darlington three minutes later to complete the half, but came back the finish out the match during the closing 40 minutes.

Ryan Terefenko scored on Darlington from about eight yards out, wide, with five ticks left in the opening half to effectively salt the result away.

“It was nice, everyone showed up to play tonight,” Wilson head coach Moss Grande said. “Defense, forwards, midfields, everyone was on the same page, moving the ball around and playing some good soccer.

Wilson, already doggedly defending, clamped down after the break to keep the Blazers completely off the sheet. Ryan Deane’s unassisted goal with 7:49 provided the final margin.

“Wilson played well defensively,” Kade said. “Us being on our heels after giving up the first goal didn’t help because we weren’t able to get support forward, we were so worried what they were going to do next, offensively, that our outside players weren’t getting upfield as much as they should have to support our attack.”

Wilson is still without key backliner Alex Cluff, who injured his shoulder in the Governor Mifflin game at Shillington.

“I’m very pleased,” Grande said. “The effort the defense gave tonight was simply phenomenal.”

Wilson outshot the Blazers 9-0 and led in the corner kick count by a 7-2 margin.
