Castillo scores 2 goals, Abington rallies to edge Council Rock South

ABINGTON —If there is one thing to be said of Abington and Council Rock South boys soccer programs it is that they are very evenly matched. It was the home team Ghosts that emerged victorious in Tuesday’s Suburban One League National Conference contest 3-2.

“We were home today and you try to win the games at home because it’s a little bit more difficult on the road,’ Abington coach Randy Garber said.

Both teams played a fairly even possession game through most of the first half with both offenses making some nice runs and some good aggressive defensive plays as well. It was not until the 35th minute the first goal was put on the scoreboard when sophomore Ethan Benedict put one home off a free kick for the Golden Hawks, giving them a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

When the second half started, Abington sophomore Juan Castillo came alive. Castillo missed an opportunity early in the half when the South keeper came out to challenge, leaving Castillo with an open net but he missed the target leaving him with a disgusted look. Castillo made up for it by getting the equalizer for the Ghosts in the 44th minute.

“The first miss kind of brought me down a little bit, but I had to step it up for the team,’ Castillo said.

Just one minute after Castillo tied the game, the Hawks regained the lead with a pretty shot from senior Sean Doyle. It was the second lead of the game for South, and again Abington found a way to pull even when senior midfielder Colin Burns put an accurate through ball in for Kevin Weintraud as he tied the game at 2-2.
