Main Line high school lacrosse teams looking strong again this spring

The Main Line high school lacrosse scene features a wide pool of talent this spring. The Main Line girls squads in particular feature a variety of teams that captured championships last spring. The Conestoga girls are coming off their first-ever PIAA state championship, while the Radnor girls were the District One champion and PIAA state runner-up last spring. Among InterAc girls teams, Episcopal Academy was the PAISAA tournament champion, while Agnes Irwin is aiming for its fourth consecutive InterAc title this spring. Merion Mercy Academy won the AACA title last year, while the Archbishop Carroll girls were undefeated in the Catholic League.

Outlook: The Rams have a lot of new faces in the program this year, particularly on the defensive end. The entire starting attack returns, led by Atillasoy, who has started at attack since his freshman year and been twice named to the All-Central League team. Veasey returns as a third-year starter at attack/midfield, and along with Michael Stewart should be taking on an increased role.
The 6-foot-5 Stahl is considered the Rams’ most dominant player, and can be a force on the offensive and defensive ends of the field. He is joined by Rodgers, Schall, Brian Stewart and Tomassetti.
Proud noted, “We have a group of athletic players are just behind them competing to get into the regular middie rotation.”
On defense, Strickland returns as a defensive starter and the Rams’ best long stick, and Proud said, “We will rely on his play and leadership to guide a relatively inexperienced defense.”

Lost to graduation: midfielders Louisa Ebby and Emma Ungar.
Outlook:  Lincicome said, “We are coming off a tough 2016 season with a lot to prove in 2017. We lost five seniors to graduation but with many returning starters, we are hopeful for a turnaround performance in 2017.  Our defense is returning three out of four starters and is strong and experienced.  We have a solid group of freshman and sophomores ready to fill some big shoes and make an impact on the field this year.  Our midfield is strong as well with returnee Ashley Roberts leading the way. Our biggest obstacle this year is perhaps in the competition we face. Being in the Central League, which has been proven to be the strongest conference in the state, we will face some of the best competition in the lacrosse game today, but we have prepared well and worked hard, and are ready to establish ourselves in the league.”

Outlook: The Friars are going to be very good in 2017, but they want to be better than that. And with premier midfielders like Mike Fay (Notre Dame recruit) and Mack Updike (Navy) leading the way, Malvern Prep has a chance to get it done. Sean Christman (Boston University) is an excellent on face-offs and Billy Coyle (Cornell) will likely be the team’s leading scorer for the third straight season. The defense will be anchored by Ray Baran (Richmond), Sam Charlton (Lehigh) and goalie Andrew Clark.

McEvoy said, “We have the ability to be strong on the offensive end, and a good face off guy. We have a lot of really good kids that are fun and rewarding to be around – they are earnest, respectful and hardworking – so we can’t go too far wrong.

“Our No. 1 priority is that we need to have possessions. So we’ll work hard at the face off X – we have a very good faceoff guy, but it takes a unit to be great, we’ll try to play strong conservative defense – we’ve made good strides at that, we’ll need to make the stops that we’re supposed to , outwork and out-scrap people for loose balls, take good care of the ball when we have it. That’s the ideal , but that’s a team that’s hard to beat.”

The challenges we will face are the strength of our schedule and our health. We have a few players coming back from injuries and we are tested weekly in the Central League. It’s a long season that we are excited to start!”

The Gators are led on offense by Pete Moeller, Frank Campanale, Nick Yi, Chad Allison and Griff Gallagher. Defensively, senior goalie Colton Gallo will have the support of senior Trevor Green and juniors Will Drake, Charlie Ryan and Connor Bryan. Newcomers Henry Reed, Luke Grayum, Tyler Drake, Hunter Gallo and Randall Brown round out a strong freshman class that gives the Gators added depth.
