Harvey hired as athletic director at Kennett

KENNETT SQUARE >> One of the most successful boys basketball coaches in District 1 is changing jobs and moving on from the hardwood to become an athletic director.
Sean Harvey is making the short trip up Route 1 from Oxford to become the athletic director at Kennett High School to replace Jeff Thomas, who is now an assistant principal at the school.
Harvey was head coach of the Hornets for 13 years and Oxford won 221 games in his tenure. The Hornets were always one of the better teams in the Ches-Mont League and District 1 under Harvey’s watch.
Harvey was also a former athletic director at Oxford for 10 years before he stepped down three years ago and was replaced by Mike Price.
“I was obviously thinking about this when I went back to school to get my principals certification that this was something I would like to do,” Harvey said. “When the opportunity came up at Kennett I just felt like I had to pursue it.
“The first thing I will try to do at Kennett will be to build relationships with all the coaches, kids and the people in the community. Building relationships is something I was always able to do. At Oxford, I was able to retain good coaches and we had a positive relationship.”
Harvey has been a gym rat since he was a high schooler himself and he talked about what it will mean to him to leave the kids he has coached for so long.
“Words cannot explain what the relationships I have had with my kids,” Harvey said. “I stayed in contact with my players after they graduated and to see them graduate college and enter the working world is very gratifying. But, I really have not had time to contemplate what not coaching high school would mean to me.”
Harvey said that he is pretty sure he is done with coaching at the high school level but he also shared that he still has a coaching job to do.
“I am going to coach my six year old and his basketball and baseball teams and I am really looking forward to that. It should be a lot of fun.”
