Harrison makes instant impact as Academy Park advances to final

It took Derik Harrison until Academy Park’s fourth game of the season to get a chance to shine.
Wednesday, he made a convincing case for more minutes.

Harrison scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as Academy Park roared back to top Pope John Paul II, 58-49, in the Steve Juenger Tournament at Haverford High School.

Shermik Lofton added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Nick Simmons drained three 3-pointers to tally 10 points for the Knights (2-2), who take on the hosts in Thursday’s title game.

Also at the Juenger Tournament:

Haverford 44, Collegium Charter 32 >> Dan Roe scored a season-high 18 points and Trey Blair added 11 as the Fords (1-6) got their first win of the season with a season-best point total. They advance to the final against Academy Park Thursday.

At the Penncrest Holiday Tournament:

Penncrest 52, Olney Charter 46 >> Tyler Norwood exploded for 38 points, including 15-for-17 from the line, in accounting for 21 of the Lions’ 23 fourth-quarter points.

The win extends Penncrest’s win streak to six games. The Lions (6-2) take on West Chester Henderson, a 63-53 winner over String Theory, in Thursday’s title game at 7:30 p.m.

At the Marple Newtown Holiday Tournament:

Bonner & Prendergast 57, Shipley 51 >> Ajiri Johnson scored 19 points, and Tymir Cooper added 13 as the Friars advance to play the hosts in Thursday’s final at 5 p.m.

Justin Gans added 11 points for Bonner & Prendie (7-0), including a 10-for-10 showing from the free throw line.

Marple Newtown 50, Oxford 40 >> Mark Dever scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, and Mike May contributed 15 points as the Tigers (3-4) advance to Thursday’s title game against Bonner & Prendergast.

At the Varsity Club Tournament:

Garnet Valley 59, Archmere Academy 42 >> Austin Laughlin scored 24 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as the Jags (6-2) rolled into Thursday’s final against Lansdale Catholic.

Brandon Starr supplied 14 points, and Connor O’Brien added 13 for GV. Archmere takes on Sun Valley, which was tripped by Lansdale, 63-43, in the consolation game Thursday.

At the South Hunterdon Tournament:

Christian Academy 76, South Hunterdon 68 >> Jalen Sherrill scored a game-high 27 points to go with seven assists and six steals to earn a spot on the all-tournament team as the Crusaders (4-3) scored a season-high in points to take the consolation game.

Teron Phillips and Davier Daniels added 14 points apiece, and Sam Geathers neared a double-double of eight points and 13 rebounds.

At the Benedictine Capital Classic:

Archbishop Carroll 52, Potomac School 45 >> Colin Daly canned four 3-pointers to score 16 points, and A.J. Hoggard added eight as the Patriots (7-1) booked a finals date with their fellow Southeastern PA Patriots, Germantown Academy, Thursday in Richmond, Va.

At the Council Rock North Tournament:

Haverford School 62, Central Bucks East 61 >> Christian Ray scored 17 points, and Kharon Randolph added 15 as the Fords (8-1) led by 10 at halftime, a lead they never relinquished.

Gavin Burke added 11 points, and Jameer Nelson Jr. chipped in 10 for the Fords, who take on C.B. South Thursday.

At the West Chester East Tournament:

Downingtown West 59, Strath Haven 56 >> John Harrar scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Panthers fell short in overtime.

Ryan Morris added 15 points, including three fourth-quarter 3-pointers, to push the game to the extra session for the Panthers (6-2).

In the William Allen Classic:

Springfield 80, Wilkes-Barre GAR 50 >> Mike Webb scored 24 points, and Alex DeAngelis added 14 as five Cougars ended up in double-figures in the consolation game.

Kyle Sullivan (13 points) and DeAngelis combined for seven 3-pointers. Justin Collins added 12 points, and Ja’Den McKenzie provided 11 for Springfield (5-2).

At the Dick Dougherty Memorial Classic:

Bristol 41, Delco Christian 36 >> T.J. Tann scored 11 points, and Jordan Parks and Tyler Penley added eight apiece, but the Knights were outscored 7-2 in overtime.

Jacob Bronkema added seven for DC (3-5) in the consolation game.

At the Reading Holiday Classic:

Steelton-Highspire 56, Upper Darby 38 >> Magd Adelwehab drained six 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 23 points, but he got too little help from the rest of the Royals in the consolation game. Noah Walker added nine points for UD (1-5).
