Pringle’s career night leads Rustin past Henderson

WESTTOWN >> The West Chester Rustin football team established three things in their resounding 28-0 nonleague win over West Chester Henderson on Friday night at a packed Rustin High School.
One, the Golden Knights still have a punishing defense. Two, Rustin can pass the football down the field and hurt opposing defenses. And, thirdly, the Knights may have the next big running back to follow in the footsteps of Rondell White and Terry Loper, in Ty Pringle. The sophomore carried the football 17 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns.
“I am not worried about being the next Rustin back, “ Pringle said. “Tonight, it was a team win. It is all about team. It was great to come back after last week’s loss and get a win. Now, I can’t wait to go out and beat West Chester East next week. It was great to beat Henderson tonight.”
Rustin (1-1) gained 262 yards on the ground, but its first score came when senior quarterback Evan Wlock completed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Loucks. The senior beat one-on-one coverage, Wlock threaded the needle for the TD and the 7-0 lead. Wlock was 5-for-7 for 92 yards on the night
“Our quarterback can really throw the football and he can read things,” Rustin coach Mike St. Clair said. “He has a good arm and our receiver is a basketball player with good speed who really works hard and is a team kid.”
Speaking of team, the Golden Knights played great team defense as they swarmed all over the Warriors’ (1-1) option attack. Henderson gained just 171 total yards and sophomore C.J. Preston, who had a big game against Chester last week, was held to 55 yards on 17 carries. Pat Register, Tim Durant and Wlock had big games defensively.
It looked like Rustin was going to score again following a six-minute drive in the second period, but Pringle fumbled the football at the Warriors 22-yard line on the drive’s 12th play. Henderson, however went three-and-out.
Six plays later, Rustin was in the end zone. Wlock hit Locks with a 24-yard completion down to the five. Pringle took the ball down to the one. On the next play, Wlock snuck in for a 14-0 lead with 30 seconds to go until halftime.
The Golden Knights took the second-half kickoff and drove down the field with a typical punishing ground attack. Pringle finished the drive with a 2-yard run and later in the third, the electric sophomore went around the left side for a 42-yard scoring run and a commanding 28-0 advantage.
Henderson’s only chance to score came midway in the fourth period when Matt Dinacci directed a drive to the Rustin 10. On fourth down, Dinacci hit Jason DePhillips, who came up just short of the goal line as Rustin took over and ran out the clock.
“Rustin played hard and they are a very good fundamentally sound team,” Henderson head coach Steve Mitten said. “We did not play hard and we took a step back from our week one win. Now, it is back to the drawing board for us.”
