West Chester Henderson coach Adams leaves for career opportunity in Ohio

WEST CHESTER >> A little less than a year after being named head football coach at West Chester Henderson, Stefan Adams has decided to leave the Warriors and go back to Ohio to be an administrator working with at-risk children.

Adams, a Henderson graduate, came back from Ohio to take the head coaching position with the Warriors a year ago.

“I got a great opportunity to work with at-risk kids in Ohio,” Adams said. “And that is at the center core of my values to be a voice for kids that do not have a voice. This is bigger than football and I really have a great opportunity to go back to Ohio and work with kids that need help. Life is full of tough choices, and I just had to pursue this. And the program will be in John Lunardi’s hands. When I took the Henderson job, me and John talked about who would be the head coach, so the kids believe in John and I believe the program is heading in the right direction.”

The Warriors were in full rebuild mode when Adams took over a season ago and Henderson finished the 2018 season with an 0-10 mark. Assistant coach John Lunardi will take over the head coaching reins in an interim capacity and the head coaching job will be posted immediately.

Training camp opens in roughly three weeks. Henderson opens the season Friday, August 23, at home against Unionville.

“Stefan got a great opportunity to go back to Ohio and work with at-risk kids and that is really what he wanted to do,” said West Chester Henderson Athletic Director Ken McCormick. “We really thought we had our man and that the program was on the way up and the kids were buying into what Stefan was teaching, but we are very lucky that we have John Lunardi to fill in until we name a new head football coach. We will post the job right away in our search for a new head football coach.”

In a letter to football parents Thursday, Dr. Jason Sherlock, the principal of West Chester Henderson High School explainer the situation.

“On behalf of the Henderson community we would like to thank Coach Adams for his service and commitment to the football program at West Chester Henderson High school. We wish Coach Adams the best of luck in the future.”
