Pennridge boys, North Penn girls win 5th straight SOL Continental titles

WARRINGTON >> Much like the celebratory bucket of ice water that drenched Pennridge coach Bob Hosier at meet’s end, the points poured forth.

“I didn’t know where all the points came from sometimes,” said Hosier, “but they added up and a lot of kids stepped up very well.”

The Rams amassed 251 points Friday and Saturday at the Suburban One League Continental Conference Championships, holding off top challenger Central Bucks West (174.5) on the way to capturing their fifth straight conference trophy.

“It’s great competition here. We always look forward to it,” Hosier said. “It’s like one big family in our conference. We really root for each other and it’s a nice group of people.”

The North Penn girls, meanwhile, were also holding up five fingers by mid afternoon, signifying their fifth straight conference title as well.

“Every time we needed somebody to do something,” coach Brandon Turner said, “they did it.”

The Knights piled up 239.5 points, holding off rival Central Bucks West (225) for the top spot.

The Pennridge boys were led by Bobby Brashear, winner of the 400, Billy Anderson, winner of the long jump Friday and triple jump on Saturday, and a determined Matt Eissler, who battled through injuries this spring to savor a conference title in the mile and another team trophy.

“It feels pretty good, especially it being my senior year, just closing it out and being able to say we did it — four years undefeated,” he said. “All of my teammates ran so well today and I was just real excited to see everyone perform and do their best.

“I’m still coming back from a lot of injuries but it was so nice being able to support all of the guys and watch them tear it up on the track today.”

The Rams took second and fourth in the 100 dash, with Joey Gant (11.20) and Jack Wasserman (11.51) pushing across the line. The duo also teamed up for a three-four finish in the 200.

“Things came through for us, and we got a lot of things done at the trials on Friday,” said Hosier, shortly after his team doused him in celebration, cheers still breaking out. “We got some things pushed through and that gives you some depth heading into the Saturday meet.”

The North Penn girls got victories from Natalie Kwortnik in the 100 dash (and in the long jump Friday), from Jaime Diedel in the 3,200, from Sierra Gee in the triple jump, and a trio of victories from versatile Anais Williams, in the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the 200 dash.

“It felt really good. We all wanted to come out and win the title, and we all worked really hard and worked together as a team to do it,” said Williams, “so I’m really proud of us and how we performed today.”

Williams blazed to a personal best in the 200, going 25.27. The Knights combined their efforts to overcome a stiff challenge from the Bucks, who were undefeated during the regular season.

“West is a really good team,” Turner said, “and they pushed us, every step of the way, even after the lunch break. So our kids really responded and they did a good job.

“This was definitely the toughest one,” Turner said of the five straight titles. “For us to come in, with not being undefeated, down 10 points (to West because of dual meet wins) and still win, it means a lot. They just did a terrific job.”
