Mercury Wrestling Roundup: Pope John Paul II’s ‘Big Three’ makes states

Pope John Paul II’s “Big Three”” will remain intact for another week.

And for a trip to state wrestling at Hershey.

The Golden Panther trio of Ryan and Matt Vulakh and Jack Files all qualified for the next level of high-school wrestling’s post-season by reaching the medal round at the South East AA Regional tournament this weekend. The Vulakh brothers are making return visits to the Giant Center while Files is taking his first trip there.

Ryan (30-0) breezed his way through the 152-pound weight class. He opened the weekend with a second-period pin of Pequea Valley’s Dylan Jackson before scoring technical falls over Northern Lebanon’s Nick Winters (4;47) and Williams Valley’s Chett Pesta (5:28). He will face Trenton Harder of Bermudian Springs, the District 3 champ, in the gold-medal match.

Matt went 4-1 at 106 after being dropped into wrestlebacks in the quarterfinal round. He pinned Susquenita’s Jaxen Zimmerman in the first period of Friday’s opener, then rebounded Saturday with a 7-0 decision of Hamburg’s Parker Davidson, a second-period pin of Saucon Valley’s Cael Markle and a 4-0 decision of Faith Christian’s Eric Alderfer.

Matt will wrestle Littletown’s Connor Brown for third place.
Files will go for fifth place at 152. he was 3-2 in the early going, with wins over Upper Dauphin’s Ben Cope (second-period pin), West Perry’s Lamdon Donnelly (first-period pin) and Faith Christian’s Leo Muzika (technical fall).

Files’ opponent will be Cope, in a rematch from the opening round.
The top six placers in each weight class qualify for states.
