Bonner & Prendie hits from deep, cruises to district title

If Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast girls basketball coach Tom Stewart had any concerns about his team being rusty following an 11-day layoff, the Pandas quickly dispelled those concerns Saturday in the District 12 Class 4A championship game.

The Pandas hit six 3-pointers and shot 70 percent from the field in the first quarter to roll to their second straight district title with a 70-38 romp over Audenreid at Archbishop Ryan High School.

“We have four girls in Maeve McCann, her sister Bridie, Alexis Eagan and Dakota McCaughan who can really shoot it,” Stewart said. “We came out and executed. When you come out and make six threes like that, it’s really hard to overcome.”

McCaughan hit three of her four 3-point field goals in the first quarter, Maeve McCann had two of her three triples and Eagan one of her two from deep then to stake the Pandas to a 26-12 lead in their first game since falling to Archbishop Carroll in the Catholic League semifinals on Feb. 19. MBAP extended its lead to 34-16 at half and never looked back.

McCann scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half. She also had four assists and three steals. McGaughan shared team-high honors with 17 points. Ariana McGeary added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bridie McCann chipped in with 10 points.

“Maeve’s really tough,” Stewart said. “She’s really stepping it up.”

Bonner & Prendie’s reward is a date with Bermudian Springs, the fifth seed out of District 3, in next Saturday’s PIAA opener.
