Mercury Girls Basketball Roundup: Hill School falls in PAISAA playoffs

Penn Charter 53, Hill School 40 >> After a hard-fought first half, a key third-quarter run helped carry the Quakers past the Blues in the second round of the PAISAA Tournament Saturday.

The Hill (15-11) trailed by just six points at halftime, but second-seeded host Penn Charter ran off a 15-2 run to start the third quarter that made the score 38-19. Seventh-seeded Hill responded with 9-2 run of its own as a three-pointer by Tess Gray, a basket by Olivia Matto and perfect free-throw shooting by Qiana Vigo and Alexa Giacche closed the gap to 40-28.

The fourth quarter saw both teams hit six free throws, but with the Quakers holding the lead, they slowed the pace of play in between trips to the line to close out the game. The two teams combined for 38 free-throw attempts in the game; Hill was dialed in, going 14-for-18.

Matto paced Hill with 15 points, including 11 in the first half. Giacche followed with eight.
