Mercury Girls Basketball Roundup: Hill School falls short of Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville 55, Hill School 52 >> The Blues’ offense went cold Saturday as they were overcome by the Larries in a hard-fought loss in the semifinal round of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League tournament at Peddie School.

Trailing 23-22 at halftime, third-seeded Hill sprinted out of the gate in the third quarter on the strength of eight quick points by Qiana Vigo and a pair of three-pointers by Olivia Matto to give the Blues their largest lead of the game, 36-27.

But second-seeded Lawrenceville responded by going on a 12-0 run that carried into the final frame as the Hill offense stalled, compounded by offensive catalyst Vigo fouling out. Hill briefly regained its footing after an inside bucket by Alexa Giacche and four straight points by Matto closed the deficit to 43-42. The Larries, however, went 10-of-13 from the free-throw line to ice the game.

Vigo finished with 21 points and Matto followed with 19.
