Mercury Girls Basketball Roundup: Hill School wins MAPL tourney opener

The Hill School girls’ basketball team made sure history didn’t repeat itself on the offensive end against Peddie School.

The Blues did well enough, in fact, to score a 48-31 victory in the opening round of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) Tournament Friday.

Olivia Matto scored 12 points in the first half en route to her game-high 19. Cynthia Williams was a force on the inside on both ends, hitting for 12 points and piling up the blocks and rebounds. Qiana Vigo added nine points for Hill.

While its defense was also stout when the two teams met during the regular season, the Hill offense struggled mightily. The Blues (14-9) went scoreless in the first quarter and trailed, 8-3, at halftime before pulling out a 28-22 win.

The Hill offense had no issues in that regard. Matto buried a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points in the first quarter to fuel a 16-6 run that lasted into the second and carried Hill to a 27-19 halftime lead. There was no let-up after the break either as the Blues pulled away in the second half. A big reason: As a team, Hill went 14-of-15 from the free-throw line for the game.

With the win, the Blues run their overall record to 14-9 on the season. Third-seeded Hill now advances to the semifinal round of the MAPL Tournament, when they face second-seeded archrival Lawrenceville School 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Peddie.
