Nelson picks up where he left off in Haverford School win

It’s hard to say how much Haverford School, with its unbeaten record, has missed Jameer Nelson Jr. But the Fords are certainly glad to have the Saint Joseph’s commit back.

Nelson scored 11 points in his return after six weeks out with a knee injury as the Fords picked up win No. 16 in a 74-60 victory over Springside Chestnut Hill.

Christian Ray led the way again with 29 points. Asim Richards chipped in 13 and Jameel Brown added nine for the Fords (16-0, 4-0 Inter-Ac), who get stronger ahead of their showdown with fellow league unbeaten Malvern Prep Friday to end the first turn of the home-and-home Inter-Ac slate.

Also in the Inter-Ac:

Malvern Prep 86, Episcopal Academy 49 >> Matt Dade scored 22 points and Colin Chambers added 11, but the Friars’ up-tempo style dealt the Churchmen (8-10, 1-3) a fourth consecutive setback.

In the Del Val League:

Penn Wood 90, Interboro 31 >> Davantae Smith did almost enough scoring by himself, leading the way with 29 points as Penn Wood (8-4, 3-0) poured it on. Twelve Patriots scored on the evening.

Connor Hughes led Interboro (1-13, 0-3) with 10 points.

Chester 79, Glen Mills 44 >> Michael Smith did a little of everything with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Clippers rolled. Karell Watkins notched a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Rahmaad DeJarnette chipped in 11 points and six boards for the Clippers (8-4, 3-0).

Aaron Thompson hit 10 field goals to lead Glen Mills (2-10, 1-2) with 20 points.

Academy Park 74, Chichester 52 >> Naseim Harley and Derrick Northern each contributed 15 points and five steals as the Knights (9-3, 2-1) caused 32 turnovers and led 29-8 after one quarter.

Harley added five assists, Abraham Jabateh also scored 15 points and Shermik Lofton tallied 13 points and seven assists for AP. Josh Hankins led the way for Chichester with 14 points. Calvin Church contributed 12 points, and Damian Perkins pitched in 11 for the Eagles (1-13, 0-3).

In the Ches-Mont League:

Sun Valley 55, Unionville 51 >> Vinny DeAngelo led all scorers with 20 points, and Dom Valente contributed a career-high 13 points as the Vanguards stayed unbeaten in the division Marvin Freeman scored 14 points for Sun Valley (11-3, 5-0).

In the Central League:

Conestoga 51, Penncrest 47 >> Aidan Carroll hit four 3-pointers to tally a team-high 12 points, but the Lions were dealt their first league loss. Malcolm Williams scored 10 points, Isaiah Rice paired nine points with four assists and four rebounds, and Matt Arbogast flirted with a double-double at eight points and nine boards for Penncrest (11-3, 7-1).

Haverford 40, Radnor 33 >> John Seidman and Luke Verzella scored 10 points each, but it was John Schievert’s 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that put Haverford up for good, outscoring the Raiders 13-5 in the final frame.

Schievert tallied seven points, and Sean Reynolds helped keep Radnor to just 18 points following a 15-point first quarter for the Fords (7-5, 4-4).

Jack D’Entremont led Radnor (7-6, 4-4) with 10 points, and Sean Mullarkey chipped in eight.

Garnet Valley 71, Harriton 55 >> Carl Schaller tallied a career-high 25 points to help the Jaguars blow open the game with a 48-22 edge over the middle two quarters. Neel Beniwal added 18 points, and Greg Vlassopoulos chipped in 15 for the Jags (10-3, 6-2).

Upper Darby 55, Marple Newtown 43 >> Jack Cavanaugh hit four 3-pointers for 12 points, Mamadou Toure added 10 points and the Royals (5-6, 4-4) rode a 12-1 edge in the second quarter for their third straight win.

Tommy Gardler led Marple Newtown with 17 points. Aziz Khammassi and Mike Tansey added 10 apiece for the Tigers (4-9, 2-6).

Ridley 60, Springfield 42 >> Enoch Clark scored 16 points, Nasir Santiago chipped in 13 and Malachi Williams added 12 for the Green Raiders (8-5, 3-5), winners of three in a row.

Nasir Cryor led Springfield (0-13, 0-8) with 13 points, and Brian Ward added 11.

Lower Merion 85, Strath Haven 53 >> Luke Edwards canned four triples for a game-high 18 points, and Brady Mutz added 16, but the Panthers (2-12, 2-6) fell for an eight straight outing.
