Main Line wrapup: Baldwin swimmers win on ‘Winter Spirit Night’

The Baldwin School swimming team defeated Agnes Irwin, 87-83, Dec. 20 as part of the sports events in Baldwin’s ‘Winter Spirit Night’ as hundreds of students, faculty and fans packed the Baldwin pool balcony. Baldwin freshman Anya Mostek took first place finishes in both the 200 free and the 100 back, and broke former legendary Baldwin swimmer Valerie Yoshimora’s 100 backstroke record, which stood since 2012. Polar Bear seniors Erin Roman and Taylor Trapp grabbed first place in the 100 breast and 50 free.
“It was one of the most exciting meets I have been a part of.” said Baldwin head coach Dave Hart, “At no point in the meet until the end did Baldwin have the lead. We had great swims that kept us in the meet. It was the final relay of the night, the 400 free relay, that sealed the deal.”
Baldwin’s 400 free relay consisted of Makena Mayinja, Emily Xiong, Anya Mostek and Frances Wilson. Sophomore Christina Cappola captured second place in the 100 butterfly. Baldwin took second place in both 200 medley relay (Ali Cappola, Erin Roman, Christina Cappola and Taylor Trapp) and 200 free relay (Rory Dries, Ali Cappola, Ava Rosenberger and Makena Mayinja), while freshman Sarah Ying took second in the 100 freestyle. Third place finishers for Baldwin were Frances Wilson (200 free, 50 free), Trapp (100 free), Ali Cappola (100 free, 100 back).

Boys’ basketball
Archbishop Carroll lost to Bishop McDevitt, 57-52, Dec. 21. Kiyl Mack nailed a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to force overtime, but the Patriots fell at home. Luke House netted eight of his 17 points in the third quarter to pace Carroll (4-2, 1-1). Anquan Hill totaled eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Newcomer John Camden, who recently transferred from Westtown, added eight points in the loss.
Barrack Hebrew Academy defeated Mesivta, 46-32, Dec. 19. For the Cougars, Itay Goldfarb scored 11 points, Ben Bernstein tallied 10, and Hillel Weitzman had nine, while freshman Danny Cohen played well at point guard.
Episcopal Academy lost to Friends’ Central, 43-42, Dec. 22. Matt Dade, Colin Chambers and Alex Capitano scored in double-figures but it wasn’t enough as a fourth-quarter rally fell short. Dade and Chambers tallied 13 points each for the Churchmen (6-6), Capitano scored a dozen.
The Churchmen defeated Abraham Lincoln, 73-58, Dec. 20, as Alex Capitano scored his 1,000th career point. Capitano finished the game with 22 points, Matt Dade tallied 20 and Colin Chambers scored 16.
Haverford High defeated Ridley, 53-50, Dec. 21. John Seidman’s 23-point effort highlighted a road success for the Fords, who made 23 of 29 free-throw tries. The difference was a 20-5 run by Haverford in the second quarter. Canan Curry contributed 12 points and John Scheivert netted eight for the Fords.
Haverford School defeated Springdale Prep (Md.) Dec. 21. Christian Ray showed the way with 19 points. Three other players reached double digits for Haverford: Gavin Burke (15), Jameel Brown (13) and Tyler Seward (12).
Radnor defeated Marple Newtown, 53-46, Dec. 21. Lew Robinson was 8-for-13 from the charity stripe and led all Radnor players with 22 points. Jack D’Entremont tossed in 12 points and Jahmir Dixon finished with eight.

Girls’ basketball
Academy of Notre Dame lost to Villa Maria Academy, 60-58, Dec. 22. Mandy McGurk scored a game-high 29 points and Maggie Pina added 11, but the Irish fell just short in a game where they trailed by 11 at half.
The Irish defeated Bishop Shanahan, 55-36, Dec. 20, as Mandy McGurk scored 21 points and teammate Maggie Pina tallied 11.
Conestoga defeated Lower Merion, 35-29, Dec. 21. Annie Nikolic had seven points and six rebounds, while Julia Morgan had six points, six rebounds and four assists in the defensive slugfest, as the Pioneers pulled out the home Central League win.
Friends’ Central lost to Hill School, 66-60, Dec. 19. Madison Smith scored 22 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, her third double-double in a row. Erin Beck scored 15 points – five treys. Raanee Smith tallied nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
Radnor defeated Marple Newtown, 70-34, Dec. 21. The Raiders (6-1, 3-1) cruised into the holidays with their fifth consecutive victory, a blowout of the host Tigers. Holly Holtsberg registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Ellie Mueller scored a game-high 14 points. Radnor hit eight shots from beyond the arc, three apiece from Brienne Williams and Audrey Rosenblum, both of whom had 11 points. Julia Rigolizzo chipped in with nine points for Radnor, which owned a 38-20 lead at halftime.
Two day earlier, the Raiders defeated Penncrest, 41-24. Radnor held the hosts to eight second-half points en route to this road win. Ellie Mueller had 15 points, Brienne Williams 10 and Holly Holtsberg nine.
The Raiders defeated Harriton, 60-57, Dec. 18. Ellie Mueller had 24 points and Brienne Williams and Holly Holtsberg added 12 points each.
Sacred Heart lost to Nazareth, 52-44, Dec. 20. The Lions got 17 points from Kyra Quigley and 10 points from Kayleigh Doyle.
One day earlier, Sacred Heart defeated Academy Park, 44-30. Kyra Quigley scored 18 points, which included nine field goals.
Villa Maria Academy defeated Academy of Notre Dame, 60-58, Dec. 22. Abby Walheim and Paige Lauder each had 22 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Hurricanes. Lauder hit two free throws with less than five seconds left to ice the game.

Wrestling
Archbishop Carroll was 21st at the Howdy Duncan Invitational in New Castle, Del. Dec. 22, largely due to Jack McQuaid, who reached the championship finals at 160 pounds. McQuaid surrendered a 4-0 decision to C.J. Polesovsky of John Carroll (Md.) in the final.
Harriton junior Roberto Lesser went 5-0 with four pins at the Spartan Duals, while junior Juke Fink went 3-2 with two pins and sophomore Zach Rubin was 4-1 with four pins.
Haverford High had some fine performances at the Howdy Duncan Invitational in New Castle, Del. Dec. 22.
Shane McAdams and Matthew Gray brought home titles for the Fords, who rang up 98 points to finish 10th in the 33-team field. McAdams decisioned Dover’s Gabe Evans, 7-6, at 170 pounds to win gold. McAdams had two wins by fall and one major decision in other matches.
At 182 pounds, Gray notched a 7-4 decision over John Seaman of Timber Creek to claim the championship. Gray registered a pin and a win by technical fall. Andrew McCarron of Haverford finished sixth at 152 pounds.
Haverford School’s Sawyer Holt won three decisions in round-robin matches, two of them by one point, before falling in the 160-pound championship final to Penn Charter’s Johnny Guiffrida at the Radnor Holiday Tournament Dec. 22, his silver leading three Ford medalists on the day. Guiffrida won by an 11-4 margin. Max Rosenberger went 2-2 with two pins in the round robin before pinning Penn Charter’s Jack Glomb to win the 182-pound third-place match. And Ben Trucksess earned eighth-place, bested in the placement match by Radnor’s Damian Falcone.
Lower Merion lost to Upper Darby, 61-15, Dec. 19. LM had three victories – at 170, James Lledo pinned Darlington Yeah in 3:10; at 138 pounds, Christian Hodges won by technical fall over Arif Hossain, 17-1, 4:51; and at 145 pounds, Matt Roth earn a major decision against Alberto Campos, 13-5.

Indoor track
Episcopal Academy’s Jack Bush and Haverford School’s Dan Whaley tied for first place in the Division II 200 meter dash at the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia Meet No. 2 at Lehigh University Dec. 22. Both runners clocked in at 23.31 seconds to share the gold medal. In the 400-meter dash, Episcopal’s Chris Zimmerman was second.
Haverford School had some fine performances at the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia Meet No. 2. Dan Whaley tied for first in the 200 meter dash, Seamus McCloskey took fourth in the 400 meter dash, Patrick Donaher was third in the shot put, Daiyann Hawkins won the 60 meter dash (6.92) and Kevin Thomas was the runner-up in the triple jump.
Radnor’s David Callaway was tops in the long jump (19-7.5) at the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia Meet No. 2. Radnor earned fourths from Owen Leonard in the 800 and Doug Rosin in the mile.
Raider junior Keara Seasholtz highlighted the Radnor girls efforts at the Ursinus College Invitational Dec. 22 with a first place finish in the 800 meter run. Freshman Lucy Henkle took fourth in the 400 meter with a 63.2 clocking. The distance medley relay of Jill Matunis, Grace Frigerio, Malie Dell Orco, and Bridget Dougherty placed ninth.
