Double gold for Penn Wood girls relay teams

Penn Wood’s Elicia Moore, Breanna Lee, Shaniyh Toodles and Kayla McFadden were on the receiving end of some nice gifts on the day after Christmas.

The quartet took home gold in both the 4 x 200- and 4 x 400-meter relays in the Robert J. Burdette Classic at Lehigh’s Philip Rauch Fieldhouse Wednesday.

Moore, Lee, Toodles and McFadden won the 4 x 200 in a state meet qualifying time of 1 minute, 48.35 seasons and took gold in the 4 x 400 in 4:14.85. Moore also qualified for the state meet with a second-place finish in the 800 (2:20.35. Toodles also took fourth in the 400 (1:02.48), while Lowe Samooy was third in the 60 hurdles (8.11).

Upper Darby also had a good day. Junior Kayla Thorpe claimed her second straight win in the shotput with a career-best heave of 40 feet, 10 ¼ inches. Gazmine Fralin finished in a two-way tie in the high jump (5-0) and Dominique Timmons was fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.13). The Royals also were third in both the 4 x 200 (1:52.75) and 4 x 400 (4:27.27) relays and fifth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (4:43.79.

Chester’s Jiya Clayton was the only other medalist from Delco. She was second in the 400 in 1:01.38.

Boys Track

The Penn Wood boys also came home the Burdette Classic with their share of gold and silver.

Tayvon Williams won the triple jump with a state qualifying leap of 43-6 ¼. Timmy Odunjo, Devon Battle, James Nmah and Duncan Tarphen qualified for the state meet in both the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays. Odunjo, Battle, Nmah and Tarphen won the 4 x 200 in 1:34.94 and were second in the 4 x 400 (3:32.235). Madda Ngaima qualified for the Meet of Champions with a third-place finish in the 60 hurdles (7.25).

Penncrest picked up quite a bit of hardware, too. Patrick Theveny won the 3,000 with a Meet of Champions qualifying time of 9:03.77. Teammate Andrew Woolery was second in the mile (4:39.49) and anchored the 4 x 800-meter relay to second in an MOC qualifying time of 8:30.37. Brendan Luong, Luke Narbus and Josh Senackerib were also on that relay squad.

Kevin Mills took third in the high jump (5-10) and Collin Tait was sixth in the 60-meter dash in a MOC qualifying time of 7.25 seconds. The Lions also were fifth in the DMR (11:19.70.

Chasen Wint and Jack Roth highlighted a good day for Haverford High. Wint, a junior, took third in the shot put with a personal best heave of 47-4 ¾. That qualified him for the Meet of Champions. Roth tied for fourth in the high jump (5-10). The Fords also took second in the 4 x 200 with an MOC qualifying time of 1:36.72) and were third in the 1,600 sprint medley relay (3:45.58).

Radnor’s Doug Rosin took third in the 800 and qualified for the MOC with a time of 2:04.08. Chichester’s Dominick Brown was fifth in the event (2:07.04). Upper Darby’s George Okyne earned a spot in the MOC with a sixth-place finish in the 200 (23.85). Chester’s 4 x 400 relay squad was fourth with an MOC qualifying time of 3:34.43).
