Main Line wrap-up: Conestoga, EA swimmers in victory lane

Conestoga senior Brendan Burns won the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and anchored the victorious 400 freestyle relay as the Pioneers clipped Radnor, 95-90, Tuesday in a come-from-behind Central League win.
Radnor got off to a strong start. Wil Cosgrove dominated the distance events with two wins, and Patrick Cullen likewise reigned in the sprints. Brian Chettle was the top scorer in diving at 221 points, while Nick Mlodzienski (200 individual medley) and Jack Undercofler (100 butterfly) also notched wins. The squad of Cullen, Undercofler, Mlodzienski and Andrew Davis put Radnor up by 17 points via a win in the 200 free relay.
The Conestoga girls defeated Radnor, 113.5-72.5, Tuesday. Radnor’s Casey Cullen ruled the distance game by winning the 200 and 500 free, but multiple individual wins by Sophia Poeta and Alex Marlowe paced the Pioneers to the win.
Episcopal Academy’s Chelsey Liu won the 100 fly and anchored the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays as the Churchwomen topped Academy of Notre Dame, 101-79, Tuesday in Inter-Ac action. Hadley DeBruyn (200 IM) and Kelly Feuzeu Mekoue (50 free) also augmented an individual triumph with legs on the victorious 200 medley relay. Kat Harrar scored a big win in diving with 238.43 points. Notre Dame produced the day’s lone double winners, with Mia Abruzzo claiming the 500 free and 100 back and Ashley Kolessar winning the 100 free and 100 breast.

Boys’ basketball
Devon Prep lost to Math Civics and Science, 67-48, Monday. Eamonn Walsh scored 13 points for the Tide in the loss to the perennial powerhouse District 12 school. Nick Crowe had nine points for Decon, while Fred Rullo added sevena nd Scion Dorsey chipped in six more.
Two days earlier, Devon Prep lost to Pope John Paul, 54-51. Eamonn Walsh tossed in 19 points for Devon.
Episcopal Academy turned up the defensive pressure to erase a two-point, first-quarter deficit and defeat Western Reserve Academy from Ohio, 55-39, in the fifth-place game in the Mercer Invitational at the Hill School Dec. 16. The Churchmen held the Pioneers to 27 points in the final three quarters and outscored WRA, 35-20, in the second half to climb out of a 12-10 hole and win going away. Alex Capitano poured in 19 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Matt Dade added 16 to pace EA to its second straight win.
One day earlier, EA defeated Peddie School, 73-58, at the Mercer Invitational. Matt Dade and Alex Capitano each scored 22 points for the Churchmen.
Friends’ Central defeated Glasgow (Del.), 57-53, Tuesday in the Rondae Jefferson Classic at Chester High School. Mason Mosley led the Phoenix with 17 points and Myles Robinson had his first double-double for the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Phoenix lost to Princeton Day School, 65-57, Dec. 15 at the Devils Hoops Classic at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Mason Mosley led the Phoenix with 20 points and was selected to the All-Tournament team.
Harriton defeated Radnor, 64-53, Tuesday, led by Markus Bradley-Lowry with 20 points, Khayri Ranson with 12 and Lance Chestnut with 10. The Rams improved to 3-0 in the Central League. For Radnor, Lewis Robinson went off for a game-high 25 points and Jack D’Entremont hit three 3-pointers to tally 13 points, but Harriton hit eight treys.
Four days earlier, Harriton defeated Springfield, 70-40, led by Alex Torbeck (15 points), Markus Bradley-Lowry (12 points) and Michael Stewart (11 points).
Lower Merion defeated Garnet Valley, 80-76, in double overtime Tuesday. Steve Payne led Lower Merion with 28 points, and Theo Henry (11 points) was 6-for-6 at the line in the second OT. Also for the Aces, Julian Hairston tallied 14 points amd Darryl Taylor scored 12 points.
Radnor earned its second win in as many days Dec. 12 with a 48-40 nonleague decision at Hatboro-Horsham. Lewis Robinson scored 18 points and Jack D’Entremont added 12 points for the Raiders.

Girls’ basketball
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Baldwin, 57-32, Dec. 14, in the league opener for the Irish (5-0, 1-0). Maggie Pina poured in a game-high 21 points and Mandy McGurk chipped in with 12. Maeve McErlane contributed with eight.
One day earlier, the Irish defeated Bonner & Prendergast, 58-36. Molly McGurk talled 27 points and Maggie Pina tallied 19.
Archbishop Carroll’s Karli Dougherty only had one field goal, but it came at just the right time, and Grace O’Neill was calm under pressure at the free throw line as the Patriots outlasted previously unbeaten Staten Island Academy, 66-63, in double overtime Dec. 16 in the second day of the She Got Game Classic in Baltimore. Trailing by two as time wound down in regulation, Dougherty, a sophomore, put back an offensive rebound to send the game into overtime. After the teams remain tied through the first overtime, O’Neill, a freshman, hit a pair of clutch free throws in the second extra session to seal the victory. O’Neill finished 6-for-8 from the line. Junior Erin Sweeney did yeoman’s work on offense. The junior hit five 3-point field goals and scored a career-high 36 points to lead the Patriots (3-2 overall, 1-0 Catholic League). Senior guard Mary DeSimone backed Sweeney with 11 points.
Two days earlier, the Patiots defeated Lansdale Catholic, 54-52. The Patriots battled back from a 32-25 deficit at halftime, narrowing the gap to three points at the end of the third quarter. Carroll regained the lead in the fourth and sealed the win on the strength of Mary DeSimone’s four free throws in the last minute. Erin Sweeney fronted the Patriots with 20 points. Grace O’Neill chipped in with 13 points and Harlem Jennings had 11. Carroll had 21 rebounds, including seven by Karli Dougherty.
Conestoga defeated Penn Wood, 30-26, Dec. 15. The Pioneers were led by productive efforts from Katharine Gay (12 points, four rebounds) and Emily Lortz (nine points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals). Conestoga trailed at halftime 14-12, but came back in the second half, led by the duo of Gay and Lortz, who scored a comibned 14 of the Pioneers’ 18 second-half points.
Friends’ Central saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 44-40 loss tp Pennington School Dec. 14. Freshman Madison Smith tallied 15 points and collected 11 rebounds while senior Raanee Smith added 13 points, three rebounds, three blocks and one steal. Jai Smith added 10 rebounds for Friends’ Central.
Harriton defeated Academy Park, 42-23, Dec. 15. Christina Brown led the Rams with 12 points.
Radnor defeated University (Fla.), 70-29, Dec. 15, as Ellie Mueller had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and Brienne Williams had 13 points and three steals to pace the Raiders in the Sunshine State. Holly Holtsberg added 10, Audrey Rosenblum nine and Julia Rigolizzo eight to help the cause.
One day earlier, Radnor defeated Harmony (Fla.), 57-28. Ellie Mueller scored 12 points, Holly Holtsberg eight and Brienne Williams seven as 17 players saw action in the Florida opener for the Raiders.
Sacred Heart defeated Merion Mercy, 36-31, Dec. 15, led by Kyra Quigley’s double-double. Quigley scored a game-high 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and made four steals for the Lions (3-2). Jaycee Webster netted 10 points, and Kayleigh Doyle added seven.
One day earier, the Lions defeated Chester, 62-28. Jaycee Webster’s 19-point performance powered the Lions, who led 33-12 at halftime. Kayleigh Doyle and Kyra Quigley netted 13 points apiece.
Villa Maria Academy lost to St. Basil, 48-46, Dec. 15. The host Hurricanes fell behind 27-18 at halftime, rallied in the second half, but fell just short in this AACA matchup. Villa’a leading scorers were Maddy Ryan (20 points) and Abby Walheim (16 points).

Boys’ swimming
Episcopal Academy defeated Hill School, 100-81, Dec. 13. Double winners in the individual events for EA were Jack Christian (200 IM, 100 back) and Cole Whitsett (50 free, 100 fly). Pool records were set by first-place finishers Sam Wesley (200 free, 1:40.98) and the 200 free relay team of Cole Whitsett, Ben Wesley, Ivan Puskovitch and Sam Wesley (1:27.45).
Haverford High placed fourth at the Kinney Invitational at Bucknell University Dec. 15. David Abrahams won the 100 fly, Jackson Graham earned second in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 back, and Zach Given paired third in the 100 back with fifth in the 100 free. Given, Abrahams, Graham and Jon Meyer teamed up to win the medley relay.
Radnor finished third at the Kinney Invitational at Bucknell University Dec. 15. Patrick Cullen won the 50 free, was second in the 100 free and anchored Radnor’s 200 free relay to gold. John El-Deiry finished fifth in the 200 IM and second in the 100 breast (where Jack Lindgren earned fifth). Andrew Davis was eighth in the 50 and seventh in the 100 free, Jack Undercofler took fourth in the 100 fly and Rhett Cosgrove finished sixth in the 500. Davis, Undercofler and Phil Kaplan joined Cullen on the winning relay.

Girls’ swimming
Episcopal Academy defeated Hill School, 104-81, Dec. 13. Double winners in the individual events for EA were Kelly Feuze Mekoue (50 free, 100 free) and Hadley DeBruyn (200 IM, 100 breast).
Haverford High’s Grace Myers won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.03 and added third place in the 100 butterfly as the Fords finished first in the girls standings at the Kinney Invitational at Bucknell University Dec. 15. Myers led off the winning 400 free relay with Emma Wojnovich, Brooke Jamieson and Abby Krissinger to apply an exclamation point to the win. The Fords were second in the medley relay with Jamieson, Emily Gavigan, Julia Curran and Laura Seavey. Krissinger and Wojnovich were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free, while Jamieson took fourth in the IM and Seavey fifth in the 50 free. Curran garnered sixth in the 100 fly and second in the 500 free, while Krissinger (third) and Seavey (fifth) scored in the 100 free.
Radnor finished fourth in the girls standings at the Kinney Invitational at Bucknell University Dec. 15 thanks in large part to Audrey Collins capturing third in the 200 IM and second in the 100 breaststroke. Zoe Metzger (sixth) and Lucy Hederick (seventh) scored in the 200 free, and Metzger added seventh place in the 500. Avery Barber earned fourth in the 100 free and 100 back, and Kelsey Wakiyama was seventh in the 100 breast.

Wrestling
Friends’ Central lost to Springside Chestnut Hill, 42-40, Dec. 13. Shaun Snyder (106), Austin Vines (138), Zach Platt-Brannon (170), and Zak Loudini (220) all recorded pins for the Phoenix, while teammate Jackson Snider (152) won 13-1 for a major decision.
Haverford High lost to Garnet Valley, 54-22, Dec. 12. Matthew Gray (182) and John Harwood (195) staked the Fords to a brief 9-0 lead. Jack Lacianca added a pin at 113 pounds for the Fords.
Haverford School lost to Glen Mills, 36-24, Dec. 14. Ryan Shephard won by fall in the 132-pound bout and Vinny Corradetti also notched a pin at 138 for the Fords.
Lower Merion lost to Ridley, 48-24, Dec. 12. Christian Hodges (138 pounds) and James Lledo (170) earned pins for the Aces, and Jack Lledo (120) and Samuel Richard (152) won decisions for LM.
Radnor lost to Penncrest, 43-37, Dec. 12. Mason Brown (106) and Nick LaVine (113) started out with pins in the first minute to stake Radnor to an early lead, Chris Henkel earned a major decision at 132, and Tom Subak (decision at 220) and Ifeyan Gavin (pin at 285) also won bouts for the Raiders.

Indoor track
Friends’ Central (girls) made some noise at Delaware Valley Girls’ Track Coaches Association (DVGTCA) Meet #1 at Lehigh University Dec. 14. Bailie Stovall started the evening with a pair of third place finishes in the 55 meter run (7.52) and the 200 meter run (26.78) and garnered top standard for Class of 2021. Inara Shell jumped to a second-place finish in the triple jump (37-6.25), which put her first in the Class of 2021 and also a Milesplit US Elite Second Team Performance. Micah Trusty debuted the indoor season with a first-place finish in the 800 meter run (2:23.39) and garnered the top spot for Pennsylvania in the Class 2022. Rebecca Wusinich won the one-mile run (5:24.6) and is currently ranked third in Pennsylvania for the Class of 2020. Izzy MacFarlane ran to a third-place finish in the 400 meter run (1:01.33) and first for her class in Pennsylvania. The Distance Medley Relay (DMR) quartet of Rebecca Wusinich, Inara Shell, Natalie Neuhaus and Lydia Russell finished fourth behind a very strong Pennsylvania field in a time of 13:00.32 and now ranked fourth in Pa. The 4X400 relay grabbed third place with a 4:16.54 and are currently ranked at No. 4 in Pennsylvania.
Haverford High runners found the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island to their liking Dec. 15. Aiden Tomov and Brendan Campbell came away with two medals each, and the Fords had six top eight finishes overall at the Bishiop O’Laughlin Games. Tomov, Campbell, Jack Roth and Josh Fingerhut took first in the 4 x 800-meter relay (8:19.68). Tomov ran the leadoff leg and Campbell brought the baton home. Tomov also was second in the 1,000 (2:33.84), while Campbell took eight in the mile (4:34.59). Curtis Weh took sixth in the long jump (20- 1½), Chasen Wint was sixth in the shot put (46-2) and Cole Gillespie was eighth in the triple jump (39-5).
Radnor’s quartet of Lucy Henkle, Abigail Idiculla, Bridget Dougherty and Keara Seasholtz placed second in the 3,200 meter relay at the Hall of Fame Classic at the Armory in New York City Dec. 15 with a time of 10:03.1. All four runners later combined to finish seventh in the 1,600 meter relay.

Squash
Shipley (boys) defeated Harriton/Lower Merion, 7-2, Dec. 13. In the match of the day, Shipley’s No. 1, Maxwell Orr went against Thomas Rosini (ranked No. 1 in the U.S.) and lost, 3-1, in a tight, spirited match.
One day earlier, Shipley took on Haverford School, ranked second in the nation, and lost, 8-1. Shipley’s Maxwell Orr had his best match of the season, beating Spencer Yager, (ranked sixth in the U.S.), 3-1, coming back in the last game to win.
