Mercury Wrestling Roundup: Owen J. Roberts, Boyertown 2-3 at Bear Duals

Neither was able to get the better of Bethlehem Liberty Saturday.

Beyond that, Owen J. Roberts and Boyertown opened their seasons with solid outings at the Brian Bealer Memorial Bear Duals. The Wildcats and Bears went 2-3 in the 10-team competition, both posting 4-1 runs on the day.

Roberts buzzed through pool competition against Dallas (58-18), Garnet Valley (42-27), Council Rock North (38-31) and Unionville (63-11), falling to Liberty in the title match 60-8. Boyertown, in turn, handled Interboro (61-12), Harry S. Truman (55-20) and Gov. Mifflin (56-15) before topping Garnet Valley in the third-place contest, 39-33.

Antonio Petrucelli (145, 152) and Connor Quinn (160, 170) both went 5-0 to lead the ‘Cats. David Forrest (120, 126), Ricky McCutchen (170, 182) and Tommy Dempsey (195, 220) all went 4-1 on the day.

Owen J’s showing came even with star wrestler Dan Mancini not in the lineup. The Wildcat senior had been working his way back from an injury, and head coach Steve DeRafelo noted he was cleared on Friday to return.

For Boyertown, Julien Maldonado (106, 113), Chance Babb (120, 126), Brett Breidor (152), Evan Mortimer (160, 170), Jacob Miller (195) and Jacob Sonder (220) all had 5-0 outings.

Upper Merion Duals >> Pottsgrove went 2-1 in the Franny Lutz Championship Duals, topping Pennsbury (36-33) and Central High (48-35) but losing to West Chester Henderson (57-16).

Zach Van Horn (195), Avery Shivak (220) and Manny Allen (285) were a force at the top of Pottsgrove’s lineup, each going 3-0.

In other duals action, Upper Perkiomen beat Central High, 45-36 and fell to West Chester Henderson, 62-11; and Methacton lost to Henderson, 48-30.

Against Central, the Indians rebounded from a 36-9 deficit by scoring six falls over the final matches. Matt Milkowich (106), Matt Martin (113), Joey Carpenter (120), Mike Milkowich (126), Nathan Reinhart (132) and Gavin Marks (138) fueled the UP comeback.

Winners for Methacton against Henderson were Roman Moser (160), Richard Armstrong (170), Jack McGowan (195), Tonee Ellis (220) and Kibwe McNair (145).

Pottsville Duals >> Phoenixville got a perfect run from Owen Koch while going 2-3 in the Case-Flynn Duals. The Phantoms beat Kutztown (51-24) and Cedar Crest (41-36) but lost to Wyoming Valley West (47-32), Pottsville (67-6) and Tunkhannock (57-28).

Koch, a freshman, went 5-0. Teammates Dave Polanski and J.J. Allen both went 3-2 with three pins apiece.

SCH Invitational >> A pair of freshmen led The Hill School to a fourth-place finish in the 13-team Springside-Chestnut Hill Invitational.

Standout Jake Craig continued his perfect season by capturing the 113-pound title in dominating fashion, finishing the day with two pins and a technical fall in the finals. Sam Beckett captured the 145-lb. title with a hard-fought 7-6 win in the finals over Malvern Prep’s Isaiah Wright.

Sophomore Derek Schmaeling pinned his way through three matches to dominate the 195 field. Will Henriksen turned in an impressive runner-up finish, going 4-1 on the day with four pins. Ethan Kreuzburg and Mike Stevens both rebounded after early setbacks to finish the day with thirds at 126 and 152, respectively.

Williamsport Tournament >> Daniel Boone placed fourth among the 20 teams participating in the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat competition.

Chase Stehman reached the semifinal round at 120, scoring a 6-3 decision on Hazleton Area’s Beck Hutchison.
