Mercury Girls Basketball Roundup: Methacton, Owen J. Roberts win tournaments

The Methacton and Owen J. Roberts girls basketball teams made the most of hosting their season-opening tip-off tournaments this weekend.

A day after topping Ridley in the season opener, the host Lady Warriors captured the Methacton Tournament crown with a 54-43 win over Lansdale Catholic on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, a ways down Route 422, the Lady Wildcats put the clamps down on their Owen J. Roberts Tournament with a 46-38 win over Northampton on Saturday after opening up with a win over Council Rock South the day prior.

Methacton 54, Lansdale Catholic 43 >> Freshman Nicole Timko continued her torrid start to the year, scoring a game-high 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers while Sydney Hargrove (11 points) and Caroline Pellicano (10 points, 12 rebounds) were key contributors for Methacton. The Warriors trailed the Crusaders 32-30 at the break, but limited LC to just 11 points in the second half en route to the win. Riley DeVitis paced the visitors with 12 points while Maile Erwin added nine.

The All-Tournament Team included Abby Penjuke (Methacton), Nicole Timko (Methacton), Emily Smith (Lansdale Catholic), Andrea Prestianne (Kennett) and Lindsay Boyd (Ridley).

Owen J. Roberts 46, Northampton 38 >> Avery White, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats past the Koncrete Kids in the championship game. Olivia LeClaire added eight while Diana Rantz scored seven.

Phoenixville 56, Chester 29 >> The Lady Phantoms closed out their season-opening tournament with a win over Chester.

Ameerah Green led the way for the Phantoms (2-0) with 28 points and five steals while Aubrie Breisblatt had nine points, five board and three steals. Marlee Brown added eight points and three steals while Hannah Sands finished with two points and four rebounds.

Pope John Paul II 35, Marian Catholic 32 >> The Golden Panthers picked up their second win to start the season with a decision over Marian Catholic at the Pottsgrove Tip-Off Tournament.

Kallan Bustynowicz paced PJP (2-0) with a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers while Lauren Ciuba added seven points in the win. Emily Shaud paced Marian with 12 points.

Pottsgrove 52, Wyomissing 37 >> Sierra Potts and Riley Simon combined for 31 points as the host Falcons topped the Spartans during the Pottsgrove Tip-Off Tournament.

Potts scored 16 with a pair of 3-pointers while Riley Simon added 15 in the win for Pottsgrove, which outscored their visitors in all four quarters. Lily Seyfert paced Wyomissing with 10 points.

Lancaster Mennonite 71, Pottstown 23 >> Despite a double-digit scoring effort from Trinell Watson, the Trojans lost to Lancaster Mennonite at the Twin Valley Tip-Off Tournament.

Watson scored 10 points shooting 6-for-10 from the free throw line while Jailyn Hampton and Reilly Owens scored four points apiece. Pottstown trailed 33-12 by the half.

Daniel Boone 27, Coventry Christian 23 >> Skyler Emory scored a game-high 13 points to lead the Blazers to a win over Coventry Christian at the Lititz Christian School Tournament.

Courtney Gabbett added five points while Autumn Becker scored three as Boone held a 16-8 lead by the half.

West-Mont Christian Academy 37, Gloucester Christian 29 >> Morgan Stimson scored 18 points as the Wings downed Gloucester Christian.
