Haverford’s Quartermain qualifies for PIAA championship tournament

Haverford High sophomore Riley Quarterman is headed to the PIAA golf championships for the first time in her career.

Quartermain shot an 8-over par 80 at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood Monday to finish in a four-way tie for ninth place at the PIAA Class 3A East Regional Monday to earn a trip to Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center for the PIAA championships next week. The top 13 players advanced to the state final at the course in York.

Answering to pressure Monday, Quartermain carded a 3-over par 36 on the back nine to secure her state spot. Six of her 11 pars came on the back nine.

“This course is hard, but I like the length of it,” Quartermain said. “I hit my driver really good today.”

Pennsbury’s Jade Gu and West Chester East’s Victoria Kim traded spots from their respective finish at the District 1 championships a week ago. Gu, who was second at the district championship, shot a 1-over par 71 to top Kim, the District 1 champion, by strokes for the regional title.

“My short game was pretty good today,” Kim said. “I knew the greens were really fast and all I really wanted to do was two-putt and get out of the way as fast as I could. My chips have been improving and my irons, too.

“My drives are usually dead on. Today they were a little off. I usually hit a high draw, but today they were hooking. But usually, I was lucky enough to have a good second shot today.”

In all, seven golfers from District 1 advanced. Liddie McCook of Downingtown East, Samantha Yao from Conestoga and Unionville’s Charlotte Scully were in that group. McCook fired a 5-over par 77 to place third. Yao carded a 7-over par 79 to finish in a four-way tie for fifth place. Scully shot a 9-over 81 to finish 13th and claim the final spot in the state tournament.

On the boys side, Radnor’s David Colleran missed moving on in Class 3A by one stroke. He fired a 6-over par 78 to finish alone in 27th place. The top 26 golfers advance to the state championships. Colleran turned in a scorecard with one birdie and 11 pars.

Carson Bacha of Central York carded a 3-under par 69 to edge Matt Fleming of Central Bucks South by two strokes to win the regional title.

Norristown’s Josh Ryan, Andrew Wallace and David Fitzgerald of Harriton, and Unionville’s Will and Connor Bennick all advanced to the state championship. Ryan and Wallace finished in a three-way tie for fifth (72). Will Bennick was part of a six-way deadlock for 12th (75). Fitzgerald was in a two-way tie for 18th (76) and Connor Bennick shot 77 for a seven-way tie for 20th.
