Shipley prepares for historic Super Saturday Sept. 29

Bryn Mawr >> Super Saturday has become a staple for The Shipley School, bringing the entire community from Pre-K to 12th grade together to celebrate the past, present and future.
Nestled down the street from historic Bryn Mawr College, Shipley is always on the cutting edge of finding new ways to showcase what the school has to offer, ranging from academics and arts to athletics.
This year is no different. In conjunction with its 125th anniversary, Shipley will host Super Saturday Sept. 29 in historic fashion. For the first time in the 39-year history that dates back to 1979, Super Saturday will conclude ‘Under The lights,’ with the girls’ soccer team hosting Princeton Day School beginning at 7:30 p.m.
“This is going to be a very special event,” said Shipley Athletic Director Mark Duncan. “It is the kick off to our 125th anniversary and will also be our first-ever Super Saturday with lights for games on the main campus. We are all looking forward to it and hope it is a great day for our community with something for everyone.”
Shipley Head of School Steve Piltch added, “During my 27 years as Head of School, I have grown to love Super Saturday. It captures the essence of what our community is all about. This year, we are especially excited about it and the official kick off of our celebration of Shipley’s 125th anniversary. Shipley has been devoted to educational excellence and character development since our founding in 1894 by the Shipley sisters.
On Sept. 29, we will celebrate from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., with a student-run carnival, community BBQ, musical performances by colleagues and students, DJ, food trucks, and athletic contests – culminating with a 7:30 p.m. game under the lights with our girls’ soccer game. We look forward to welcoming students, parents, families, and friends to our 39th Super Saturday.”
Super Saturday kicks off in the morning with a carnival in Yarnall Gymnasium for the younger audience. Girls’ tennis starts the athletic portion of the day when the Gators face Princeton Day School beginning at noon. Following tennis will be field hockey at 3 p.m. before boys’ and girls’ soccer wraps up the day with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
While the athletes are competing, there will be plenty of action going on, including a Community BBQ, Food Trucks featuring different treats capped off with an Alumni Homecoming Party from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
“I am excited to be the All School President as Shipley celebrates its 125th anniversary,” said Henry Katz, the All School Student President for Shipley. “This is Shipley’s 39th Super Saturday and it is always a great day for the whole community. I have been going to Super Saturday since I was five years old and I have always enjoyed the carnival. Now that I am a bit older I have come to enjoy watching my peers play in front of the whole school in the games. This year will be amazing as we play soccer under the lights for the first time. You can be sure The Swamp (student cheering section) will be there in full force cheering on the Gators.”
Proceeds from the carnival will benefit Shipley’s sister schools, the Brain Tree School in Uganda and Andrew Jackson School in Philadelphia.
