Conestoga hands game Strath Haven first loss on links

Kevin Smith, Nick Cardow and David Merz all had fine rounds for the Strath Haven golf team. Conestoga’s Michael Walz, Morgan Layland and Ben Lee, though, were just a little better.

Walz shot even-par 35, while Layland and Lee finished 1- and 2-over par, respectively, to lead the Pioneers to a 184-203 Central League victory over the Panthers at Waynesborough Country Club.

Conestoga’s top five golfers shot 38 or better to hand Strath Haven (8-1) its first loss.

Smith had two birdies and three pars for a 2-over round of 37 to lead the Panthers. Cardow had one birdie and three pars and Merz drained five pars to finish at 4-over 39.

In the Catholic League:

La Salle 217, Bonner & Prendergast 251 >> Rob Dougherty posted an even-par 33 on the front nine at Bala Golf Club, but it was enough to lift the Friars over the Explorers. Dylan Williams carded a 41 and Drew Church shot 42 for MBAP.

Steve Jackson, Matt Gregor and Drew Church all shot 35 for La Salle.
