Wrestling: Martini’s decision gives Penncrest the edge over Radnor

It came down to the final three weight classes in Penncrest’s 36-35 dual meet victory over Radnor Wednesday.

The Lions had a forfeit bonus looming at 145 and trailed by 14 entering the match at 132. They got to work. Egan Hess pinned Blake Anderson in 3:48 to key the comeback. Then Nick Martini secured a 4-0 decision against Andrew Brown. That gave Penncrest (3-4, 1-0 Central) the nine points it needed, combined with the six from the forfeit, to overcome the Raiders (4-3, 0-2).

Elsewhere in the Central League

Marple Newtown 48, Springfield 33 >> Although the Tigers benefited from four Springfield forfeits, Marple Newtown (2-0, 2-0 Central) got the job done on the mat against the Cougars (2-3, 0-2). Armen Dervishian got things started with a pin of Tyler Bennett in the 170-pound weight class in 3:06. By the time the forfeits were added up, Marple had a 30-0 lead. Springfield showed resilience, though, with Jake Methlie (106) and Jason Terzoglou (113) each picking up bonus points with pins. Anass Elfernanin ended that Cougars run with a pin of his own at 120 in 3:13.

Garnet Valley 50, Haverford High 19 >> The Fords got off to a hot start, taking four of the first five matches with the lone loss a forfeit, but they couldn’t keep pace with the Jags as the evening went on. Michael Ryan’s pin of Perry Desmon with just six seconds left in the 145-pound bout highlighted the Haverford (3-4, 0-2 Central) effort. On the other side, Garnet Valley (4-3, 2-0) got falls from Brian West (195), Coltin Deery (220), Tommy Mahoney (285) and Kevin Puliti (120).

In the Catholic League:

Bishop McDevitt 51, Archbishop Carroll 26 >> In a match that featured nine forfeits, the Patriots won three of the five matches that were contested. Nick Poulos (138) and Jack McQuaid (170) both won by major decision, while David Grill pinned Regan Loughney at 145.
