Haverford School cross-country team earns Gordon B. Hattersley Jr. Award

Haverford – The Haverford School cross-country team received the Gordon B. Hattersley Jr. ’48 Award, given to the varsity sports team with the highest academic average. The award was presented during the fourth annual Athletic Awards Ceremony at the end of the year.

The award honors the memory of Gordon B. Hattersley Jr. and his generosity to the School. In 1999, Hattersley and his wife, Beverly, made a $1.3 million challenge grant to The Campaign for Haverford and received naming rights to the School’s swimming pool, which they named in memory of former 40-year swim coach Joseph D. McQuillen.

Hattersley came to Haverford in his sophomore year from Oak Park, Illinois. He swam breaststroke and relay for the Fords. He contributed to The Index and the Haligoluk, was a member of Current Events Club, Dramatics Club, Glee Club, Three Fours singing group, Student Council, and Signet Society, and was on the Honor Roll. Hattersley earned a B.A. from Yale University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he was president of the MBA Club and was named Distinguished Military Student. He subsequently served in the U.S. Air Force.

He led a successful business career and engaged in many volunteer activities throughout his life. Hattersley’s philanthropy extended beyond The Haverford School, where he was a member of the School’s Heritage Society, comprised of members of the School community who include Haverford in their estate plans. He served on the boards of Paoli Memorial Hospital, the Academy of Natural Sciences, and other institutions, and was instrumental in founding Community Volunteers in Medicine, a health care facility that provides medical and dental care to the uninsured and underinsured people of Chester County.
