Xandy Hammitt and Clay Gaieski inched closer to bringing a state tennis championship back to Strath Haven with a pair of wins Friday, earning a berth in Saturday’s PIAA Class 3A boys doubles semifinals at the Hershey Racquet Club.
The District 1 champions opened state play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Joel Castillo and Luis Rivas-Cortez, the District 3 third-place tandem out of Reading. Hammitt and Gaieski then turned their attention to Hampton’s Ben Ringeisen and Ted Donegan, battling past the District 7 runner-up by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
In Saturday’s semifinal, slated for 11 a.m., Hammitt and Gaieski will square off against District 10 champions Joe DeMarco and Matt DeMarco. The Cathedral Prep pair cruised to 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 wins Friday.
The other semifinal is an all-District 1 affair, with runner-up Great Valley (Nikil Gangoli and Sam Kesti) facing third-place Upper Dublin (Bryan Szyana and Danny Katz).
Competition is set to conclude later Saturday with the championship and third-place matches.
