Xandy Hammitt, Clay Gaieski and Phinneas L’Armand swept the singles to propel the Panthers to a 3-1 victory over District 3 champion Hempfield in the first round of the state tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Hershey Racquet Club.
The victory sends Strath Haven into Friday’s quarterfinal where it will take on District 1 runnerup Unionville at the Hershey Racquet Club (6:30). The Indians knocked off District 12 champ Central, 5-0.
Hammitt, who teamed with Gaieski to win the District 1 Class 3A doubles tournament crown, needed three sets to beat Jake Curtin, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. Gaieski and L’Amand both won in straight sets.
