Safe to say, the pair isn’t ready to call it a spring season just yet.
On Friday afternoon, Owen J. Roberts’ Holden Smith and Brandon Miller played themselves into the quarterfinal round of the District One Class AAA Doubles boys tennis tournament where they lost to top-seeded Bryan Szayna and Danny Katz.
Despite the loss, Holden and Smith secured a spot in Saturday action where they’re slated to face off against Council Rock North’s Matt Whalen and Jeff Zhao in the 3-4 playback round at 1 p.m. to keep their hopes of making the PIAA Class AAA Tournament alive.
For the day, the Pioneer Athletic Conference doubles champions opened up with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Quakertown’s Zach Pernia and Ray McCarroll. They then handled Kennett’s Trent Harner and Davis Pierce before falling to Szyana and Katz 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The PAC’s runner-up pairing — Subhanik Purkayastha and Alan Shen — fell to Conestoga’s Cahlin Pragada and Carson Lortz in the opening round 6-4, 6-3.
Spring-Ford’s pairing of TJ Cruickshank and Malchu Pascual fell to Kennett’s Harner and Pierce in the opening round, 6-4, 6-3.
In Class AA action, Upper Perkiomen’s pairing of Jake Vogel and Josh Landis won their opening round matchup against Octorara’s JJ Michalski and Tim Dastalfo 6-0, 7-6 (7-2). They then dropped their semifinal against Lower Moreland’s Sam Niman and Ryan Farber 6-0, 6-4.
