Haven’s Hammitt and Gaieski reach District 1 semis in doubles

It’s been quite a week for Strath Haven’s Xandy Hammitt and Clay Gaieski.
Wednesday, they led the Panthers to the PIAA Class 3A team tennis tournament for the first time in 16 years. And then Friday the pair secured a spot in the state Class 3A doubles tournament by reaching the semifinals of the District 1 doubles tournament at the Healthplex in Springfield.
Hammitt and Gaieski, who are seeded third, won three matches to reach the semifinals and earn an automatic berth in the state tourney. Hammitt and Gaieski eliminated Jake Eisenberg and Chris DiMedio of Council Rock North in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. They then took care of C.B. West’s Brad and Dale Johnson in the second round, 6-2, 6-3, before knocking off Lower Merion’s Sessan Adebamgbe and Matt Robinson in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-2.
Hammitt and Gaieski take on second-seeded Greg Zlobinsky and Isaac Rockower of Abington in the semifinals, which start at 1 p.m. at the Healthplex.
