Swart’s breaks tie in final minute as Carroll nips Springfield in thriller

A battle between two of the best programs in the area failed to disappoint.

Sam Swart scored the winning goal with a minute to play in the second half, lifting undefeated Archbishop Carroll over Springfield, 10-9.

Carroll goalie Maddie Ferraioli (10 saves) denied Springfield’s Olivia Little with 10 seconds to go to preserve the Patriots’ victory at Halderman Field.

The Cougars (13-2) stormed back from a 9-5 deficit with five minutes to play. Maggie O’Connell netted Springfield’s fourth straight goal with 1:45 left to even the score, 9-9.

Swart paced Carroll with four goals and Katie Detweiler recorded a hat trick.

Little powered Springfield with three goals, while O’Connell and Bailey O’Brien each had two tallies.

In other nonleague action:

Haverford 21, Merion Mercy 13 >> Lydia Hetznecker registered five goals and three assists and Laura Winters netted a game-high six goals for the Fords, who led at halftime, 14-8.

Nora Janzer added four tallies and two assists, while Reilly Morgan and Willa Hetznecker contributed two goals apiece.

Laura Johns made 11 saves in goal.

Garnet Valley 15, Great Valley 10 >> Regan Nealon posted three goals and three assists, while Kara Nealon paired four helpers with one tally as the Jaguars downed the Patriots.

Madi McKee notched a hat trick while Riley Delaney and Cam Faith each had two goals and an assist for the Jaguars. Lauren Kinnee made 14 saves between the pipes.
