High school tournaments aren’t always the most likely places to spot upsets on the tennis court. Apparently no one told Cahlin Pragada and Carson Lortz that on Friday.
The eighth-seeded duo from Conestoga tipped top seed Max Safanov and Robert Frigerio of Radnor in a classic quarterfinal at the Central League doubles tournament.
Pragada and Lortz prevailed in a three-set thriller, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) to book passage to the semis, which will be played Saturday at the Healthplex along with the finals.
The only Delco representative among the semifinalists is third-seeded Xandy Hammitt and Clay Gaieski of Strath Haven, who comfortably made the semis to await Pragada and Lortz. After a first-round bye, Hammitt and Gaieski handled Conestoga’s Matt Walton and Kai Czurbryt-Ogino, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round before sweeping Radnor’s Alex Weiss and Jonathan Davis, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarters.
Also in the semifinals is second seed Sesan Adebamgbe and Jared Robinson of Lower Merion and Harriton’s Isaac Goldenberg and Samarth Gowda. Goldenberg and Gowda prevailed in the quarters at the expense of Strath Haven’s Phinneas L’Armand and George Steinke, 6-2, 6-4.
