Cardinal O’Hara ends decade-long drought with return to PCL semifinals

For the first time in more than a decade, Cardinal O’Hara’s boys’ tennis team is bound for the Catholic League semifinals.

Ryan Shields breezed through his No. 2 singles match without dropping a game, and the pairing of Patrick McCarry and Martin Meenan did the same at No. 1 doubles as the Lions steamrolled Lansdale Catholic, 5-0.

The Lions advance to take on St. Joseph’s Prep in Wednesday’s semifinals. It’s the first time in at least 14 years that O’Hara has made it through.

In the Del Val League:

Penn Wood 5, Chester 0 >> Victor Alao (6-1, 6-1), John Kpankpa (6-0, 6-1) and Christopher Jones (6-0, 6-0) secured singles wins for the Patriots en route to a blanking of the Clippers.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Downingtown West 7, Sun Valley 0 >> Dylan McKay kickstarted the Whippets’ strong day with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

In nonleague action:

Academy Park 3, Pottstown 2 >> Mel Schoolfield and Sahmir Blackwell came through with a huge win at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-2, to cement the win for the Knights (5-6). Phil Tang was triumphant at No. 2 singles for AP.
