Carroll works OT to take battle of Delco’s finest

Extra innings were required when the top two baseball teams in Delaware County met Saturday afternoon in a nonleague game.

Archbishop Carroll, the No. 1 team in last week’s Daily Times Super 7, scored four runs in the top of the eighth to beat No. 2 Marple Newtown, 6-2.

Kevin Downs’ single knocked in Rich Melito with the game-winning run. Downs later scored on an RBI triple by Drew Butera.

Ian Myers entered in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and none out. Myers promptly retired all three batters he faced for the save. Jack Houser, who worked an inning-plus, picked up the win.

Downs, Butera and Cole Chesnet each had two hits for the Patriots (7-3).

Cameron Mathes smacked two doubles for the Tigers (4-3).

Bishop Eustace (NJ) 8, Episcopal Academy 4 >> The Churchmen fell despite pelting Eustace pitching for 10 hits, while EA’s hurlers allowed only three hits and three walks on the afternoon.

Cam Van Hoorebeke went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs for EA.
