Chichester’s Hagel takes Del Val singles crown

Joey Hagel is the class of Del Val League boys tennis.

The top seed in the league’s singles tournament from Chichester, Hagel didn’t lose more than three games in a set in his first two matches and won the title by injury walkover Wednesday to secure a spot in the District 1 Class 3A singles tournament.

Kevin Tran, the No. 2 seed out of Academy Park, made it to the final without dropping a set before bowing out with an injury. He also locked up a spot in the district tournament, which takes place next Friday at the Springfield Healthplex.

Cliff Paasewe of Chichester was the darling of the tournament, winning his first two matches in straight sets as an unranked player before bowing out to Tran in the semifinals. He took out the tournament’s fifth and third seeds, respectively.
