Boccella thrives in No. 1 spot for Sun Valley

Moving up to first singles was no problem for Sun Valley’s Gabe Boccella.

Bocella won the first varsity match of his career, yet the Vanguards still needed a three-set victory at fourth doubles by David German and Anthony Gonzalez for a 4-3 nonleague win over Glen Mills.

Boccella won 6-0, 6-3 for his first win, and German and Gonzalez came back to beat Joshua Luciano and Jermaine Beverly 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the victory. Sun Valley won three of the four doubles matches.

Chris Stinson and Destin Dortch won at second and third singles, respectively, for Glen Mills.

In the Catholic League:

Cardinal O’Hara 5, Roman Catholic 0 >> Kevin Lutz and Jason Haley stayed undefeated with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at second doubles. Andrew Shuda and Ryan Shields lost just one game each at first and second doubles, respectively.

In Central League action:

Radnor 7, Haverford High 0 >> Max Safanov, Alex Weis and Jonathan Davis swept the singles in straight sets to help the Raiders (3-2 overall, 2-1 league) bounce back from a loss to Conestoga. Safanov did not lose a game at first singles. Radnor won all seven matches in straight sets.   

Scott Kaplan and Sammy Ortiz put up a fight at third singles for Haverford before falling to George Hu and Chris Rinehart, 6-3, 6-1.

Strath Haven 6, Upper Darby 1 >> Ben Troutman and George Steinke, Harrison Hotham and Cole Wirth, Justin Snyder and Ian Terry and Michael Lu and Dylan Taylor dropped a total of five games while sweeping the doubles for the Panthers.

Zoe Lor was a 7-6 (3), 7-5 winner at second singles for UD.

In the Del Val League:

Academy Park 3, Penn Wood 2 >> Wins by Kevin Tran, Phil Tang and Melvin Schoolfield in the singles competition lifted the Knights over the Patriots. All won in straight sets with Tran a 6-0, 6-0 winner at first singles.

Triston Bernard and John Kpanka, and Steven Siv and Joseph Tholley swept the doubles for Penn Wood.
