Max Fitzgerald went into the weekend on a quest to win a District 1 wrestling title and move closer to becoming the third member of the 100-win club at Academy Park.
The senior 170-pounder accomplished both goals Saturday at the District 1 Class 3A East championships at Council Rock North High School.
Fitzgerald pulled out a 10-9 victory over David McCoy of William Tennent to win the title. Fitzgerald was the only Delco wrestler to reach the championship round. He won by fall in the quarterfinals and by injury default in the semifinals. Fitzgerald has 95 wins in his career.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Southeast Regional championships.
Osualdo Carbajal of Interboro pinned Daniel Baskin of Harry S Truman in 3 minutes, 41 seconds to take third at 106. Jeremy Gannon (113) and Dylan Cordingley (152) of Chichester finished fourth, as did Tyler Simpson (145) and Dante Pangowish (182) of Glen Mills.
Sun Valley’s Hunter Catka is moving on, too. He was third at 195 pounds at the Class 3A Central championships at Quakertown High School.
Haverford School had two medal winners at the National Prep tournament. Chris Kober placed third at 220 pounds, while teammate Ryan Shepherd was seventh at 106. Blair Orr of Episcopal Academy took fourth at 106 pounds.
