Agnes Irwin squash team finishes fifth at Nationals

Before a crowd of more than 100 people, the girls squash teams from Agnes Irwin and Episcopal Academy squared off Monday night to complete the US Nationals which were complicated by a snowstorm in Connecticut Feb. 11-12.

AIS and EA were playing for fifth place on Monday after meeting two previous times in the regular season, each school winning once.

The Owls defeated Episcopal Academy, 6-1, Monday to post their best finish at Nationals in school history.

Agnes Irwin squash coach Alex Stait said, “I’m so proud of this year’s team, which saw injuries to two of our top players and could have wrecked the season. But the girls showed fantastic team spirit and resilience and bounced back to break [school] records and finish in the top five for the first time.”

The Owls go into the off-season with no seniors in the top eight, and a key player returning next year from injury, as well as a AIS Middle School team which finished in the top 20 in their national tournament.
