McAteer, Garnet Valley defend home court for tourney title

Emily McAteer posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Garnet Valley to a 43-33 win over Archmere Academy in the championship game of the Garnet Valley Varsity Club Holiday Tournament Thursday.

McAteer was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She had seven points in the fourth quarter and finished with three assists and two steals.

Brianne Borcky, who earned all-tournament honors, netted nine of her 14 points in the final period, to go with five rebounds, four blocks and two assists. Nicole Barnes had a solid floor game with two points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the undefeated Jaguars (7-0).

In the consolation game:

Great Valley 38, Academy Park 35 >> The Knights made things interesting in the second half after totaling only five points in the first quarter and trailing by six at intermission. Mahya Woodton led Academy Park with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Riley Street chipped in with nine.

Woodton was named to the all-tournament team.

At the St. Pius X (Ga.) Christmas Classic:

Bonner & Prendergast 64, Blessed Trinity (Ga.) 26 >> The Pandas bounced back after a loss Wednesday thanks in part to a fast start that included six 3-pointers in the first quarter. Maeve McCann and Maggie McCann each hit three treys and the Pandas (5-2) finished 10-for-17 from beyond the arc.

Nyah Garrison fronted a balanced scoring attack with 16 points and McPeak added 11. McCann netted nine points and Emily Monaghan added six. Bonner & Prendie takes on the winner of McGill-Toolen (Ga.) and Charlotte Catholic (N.C.) in the third round Friday at 1 p.m.

At the Marple Newtown Christmas Tournament:

Marple Newtown 46, Norristown 31 >> Natalie Ayoub scored 15 points, including nine in the third quarter, to guide the Tigers (4-6) to a 2-0 performance at their holiday tourney. Ayoub also grabbed 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Hallae Robinson tossed in nine points for the Tigers, who outscored Norristown, 33-16, in the second half.

At the Penncrest Holiday Tournament:

Harry S. Truman 55, Penncrest 50 >> Megan Arndt and Katie Russo paced the Lions (7-1) with 15 points apiece in the championship game. The defeat snapped Penncrest’s seven-game winning streak to begin the season.

Grace Harding poured in 11 points for the Lions. Kat Mullaney (six points) and Russo were selected to the all-tournament team.

In nonleague action:

Archbishop Carroll 75, Prep Charter 29 >> The Patriots cruised to victory behind Maggie Pina (14 points, five rebounds), Molly Masciantonio (13 points) and Bella Sorrentino (12). Julie Carney added 10 points and Theresa Kearney contributed seven points and seven rebounds.
